So invigorated with a Community Engaged Learning project working with Western University students on how to raise awareness and show how those with disabilities are systemically discriminated against by an ablelistic system that perpetually sees them as ‘less than’. And how Human Rights and Canada’s obligation as signatories on the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities have a role to play in setting this right. Along with the legal obligations, students are working on how to raise awareness for those with disabilities, families and supporters, to apply pressure on politicians at all levels, by showing how the current systems are failing on all fronts. The solution is a publicly funded national disability insurance program for all people with long-term and chronic disabilities that would get rid of the bureaucratic, unfair and nightmarish system that currently exists. A national program that would be entitlement based, non-means tested, from cradle to grave, have paid caregiving, would be economically viable and be desirable for all Canadians. The disability is not the fault of the person with the disability, therefore the cost for that disability should not be borne by that person, nor their family. That cost should be borne by the Canadian public. A cost that will pay dividends not only in human value, but economic value as well. Pie in the sky? Absolutely not. Other countries (and our own) have lead the way whereby we can learn and build a Made-In-Canada plan. Subscribe here: https://lnkd.in/etNHG4VB

It was a strange day in April 2023 when I visited a site that I am involved in alongside Rod Turner and Ross Harper in the East Midlands. I arrived to find a whole number of distressed staff and also the day centre clients in their care, some quite literally in tears, in the cafe on site. What's going on? I asked. The group - which offers not only day centre support but also support with personal care, which is a hard service to find and drastically needed - particularly post-covid as so many were shut down - was to be closed down permanently. Why? I asked. The nationwide charity running the service had employed a consultant to find out why there was a gigantic hole in their finances, and the solution proposed was to shut down in the entire county of Derbyshire. Now I've got a reasonable head for figures - and I knew that the discounted rate we were charging for the facility was very reasonable (on investigation, it was half of what some other venues were charging them for lesser facilities!). I knew roughly what the day rate would be - largely paid by the local authority from the budget of the clients, who tend to be adults with severe physical disabilities and/or special educational needs. I knew this because I've consulted for similar businesses in the past. A quick back of the coffee coaster revealed that the service should be able to survive, and perhaps even thrive with room for good management and - thanks to donations and community support - the ability to buy some much needed kit. So what was going on? Layers of management, no direction, impossible to make decisions - and, behind it all, rumours of a spending scandal after a very significant donation was received. This didn't matter, though, in the moment. This wasn't root cause analysis. It was absolutely clear to me, in that moment, that something had to be done. I spoke with my partners - both of whom have a strong track record in both care and charity work - and an agreement was made. I had a whole 7 weeks and their support and expertise to get this done. On day 50, that new service started - the staff were given new jobs, we were so lucky to get a great manager who was being pushed off a sinking ship - and, most importantly of all, the people who that day said to me "I'll have nowhere to go" and "this is the best part of my week" - still had their service - and instead had an agile management team, who could say yes to activities and trips that previously had been kiboshed for no good reason. It was day 365 of that service last week and yesterday was the day to commemorate what has been achieved. The service, as Rod says below, has doubled in size. Around it, other services have been closing. We are moving to larger premises and hope to continue to deliver this fantastic standard of day support services, and have eyes on the next site 20 minutes away. Humbled, fulfilled, delighted and honoured - it really was the case of being in the right place at the right time.
Yesterday was the one year anniversary of Aera Support. This is a not for profit organisation that we set up to provide day services to adults with Physical and Learning Disabilities after a Charity had decided to stop the service. We saw how vital this service was to the people in the area and under the leadership of Marrianna Rogers I am happy to say that the people using this service has doubled in just a year and we are moving to a bigger premises so that we can support more people with high needs. It was great to chat to everyone yesterday at the celebrations and see just how important this service is to their lives and how much they all enjoy attending. This photo is of our care staff who are absolute heroes as well as the many volunteers that take time out of their week to help us. What a great example of #community #disability #Derbyshire Adam Lawrence

I’m asking for 3 things. First, some background: I am in ongoing discussions with two non-profits, one with a fairly large lobbying budget, regarding proposed legislation that can improve the process through which children with developmental disabilities obtain in-school accomodations. Here is what I need: 1. If you have been through the IEP process or a due process proceeding, send me some ideas on what changes you would make (in the comments or a private message). Be creative. 2. If you know of proposed bills on these topics, let me know. I’d rather not reinvent the wheel if there are already good bills out there that just need more support. 3. If you have relationships with any FL or federal legislators and are willing to make a call on behalf of these kids, please reach out to me. Thanks all! #specialeducation #disabilitycivilrights #autism

Terms change, and shared language is vital to advocacy work 💡 If you want to review or update your foundational knowledge on the 2SLGBTQAI+ community, I would recommend this course from QMUNITY. It is important to note that Canada is seeing a rise in gender-based violence and a rise in hate crimes based on a persons' sexual orientation. Reported hate crimes against members of the queer community rose 54% from 2019 to 2022, (Statistics Canada, 2024). Education is a key element to help prioritize understanding, and for us to see these figures decline.

📋 The Carer reports that more than 60 per cent of adults believe the political agenda doesn’t prioritise the needs of learning-disabled adults. These findings, from a survey conducted by Opinium on behalf of the learning disability charity, Hft, also show that “a lack of funding” and “unchanging attitudes among the public” are preventing learning disabled people from living the best life possible. 🗣️ Stephen Veevers, CEO of Hft, says: “We know life can be complicated for everybody. But learning disabled people often face additional hurdles. Some are stopped from working towards their dreams and aspirations. Many can’t live where they choose, or with whom they choose.” 💡 Adult social care plays a crucial role in meeting the diverse needs of learning-disabled adults, providing essential support that empowers them to live fulfilling, independent lives within their communities. #adultsocialcare #learningdisabilities #funding https://lnkd.in/epK7AaZK
