What’s up with K-12 Outreach? Since 1991 the Purdue University College of Science Outreach has been delivering science equipment to high schools in central and northern Indiana. 2024-25 we have over 80 teachers in 25 high schools who are a part of this program. “You can’t be what you can’t see.” – Secretary Roberto Rodriguez I recently attended an inspiring webinar hosted by The Hunt Institute titled “High Quality Innovative Pathways to Strengthen the Teachers of Color Pipeline.” The discussion was a wake-up call and a reminder of the importance of diversity in education. 🌟 The speakers shared powerful insights: ➡️ Secretary Roberto Rodriguez of U.S. Department of Education: "You can’t be what you can’t see." ➡️ Dr. Michael Sorrell of Paul Quinn College: "You can be a student in America and maybe go through your entire K-12 education and NEVER have a Black teacher." ➡️ Dr. Mark Teoh of the Raikes Foundation: Asked important questions to the panelists and sought informative insights. These words resonated deeply with me. Growing up, I had only one male teacher of color, my band director, Mr. Moore. His presence and mentorship profoundly impacted my life, showing me the importance of having diverse role models in education. Mr. Moore's guidance and belief in me helped shape my path and inspired me to dream bigger and be a representation to young people that look like me today. 💡 Here’s what we can do: 1. Support initiatives that diversify the teacher pipeline. 2. Advocate for better pay and resources for teachers. 3.
