Marketing Plan vs Marketing Strategy? The Forgotten Fundamentals So what's the difference? Imagine you’re setting off on an epic journey across the seas. Consider your marketing strategy as your trusty compass. It dictates where we’re heading, doesn’t it? Now, take a moment to think of your marketing plan. This is nitty-gritty map in hand. this is how you’ll navigate to that dream destination of yours. It’s easy to mix them up. But they’re like chalk and cheese. One’s about direction while the other charts out each step. A robust marketing strategy sets out what you aim for. Those lofty goals and unique offerings make customers turn their heads. This ‘why’ and ‘what’ form our campaigns’ backbone. Like creating a blueprint before the building begins. Setting solid foundations for all choices ahead. Let’s look at it from another angle. A marketing plan is your blueprint. The specific actions you’re going to take. It lays out all the nitty-gritty details like which campaigns will run and when. How much money you’ll throw into each one, and who or what you’ll need to get things rolling? Think of your strategy as a novel’s plot. Then the plan would be its various chapters that bring everything together. This beast can morph and pivot based on whatever curveballs life throws at us. Getting a grip on how these two elements dance with each other is key – they’re partners in crime! Your grand marketing strategy breathes life into your marketing plan. Pointing it where to go and why it’s heading there in the first place. Without this strategic compass guiding you along. Any old list of tasks becomes… well…tasks without context or clarity! And let’s not forget: if you’ve got no game plan actioning those big dreams of yours? Then they remain exactly that—dreams tucked away inside your head. ✅ For Private Company Owners—Are you really serious about your Marketing? Here is a classic checklist of traits that indicate that either you, or your private company team, or BOTH, are NOT serious about your company’s marketing efforts: ❓ Our sales people take care of our marketing. ❓ We have a website, logo, and collaterals, what more could we possibly need? ❓ Our VP of Sales (who has little marketing experience, knowledge, or interest) oversees our marketing. ❓ We don’t have a written marketing plan or budget. ❓ Our sales and marketing teams don’t regularly meet together to discuss an integrated and collaborative approach to marketing. ❓ Our senior-most marketing professional has 5-years (or less) of marketing experience. ❓ Only our marketing people talk about marketing. ❓ We don’t know what SEM, OTT, API, CTA, CTR, or UX stand for. ❓ We’re starting digital marketing next quarter—we’ve got all our marketing covered. ❓ We talk to our customers and competitors all the time—we know what they want and what they are doing. ❓ We don’t use reports to track marketing effectiveness, we just know what works and what doesn’t. If 5 or more of the above apply to you and your company, you are not taking your marketing seriously at all. There is no industry in the U.S. economy that is not currently experiencing the highest level of competition in its history. This makes marketing more important than ever. 💡 Marketing helps you differentiate from your competition and to REGULARLY get the message across in the most impactful way to your clients and prospects. 🔥 This helps you gain market share, increase leads, sales, and YES, also profitability. Top 5 Elements of a Profitable Marketing Strategy: 1) A strategy, not just tactics. Or put another way, you need blueprints, not just hammer, nails, and a dream. Too many businesses are marketed with random tactics the owners hope and pray work. (They don’t). Y’all. That’s not a strategy. Don’t know to build one? ASK FOR HELP. It’ll pay you to PLAN. It’ll drain you not to. 2) Ideal customer profile. I call it an avatar. It’s who you want to sell to, who can and WILL eagerly buy from you. You can’t sell to everyone. You won’t. Get specific. Get clear on who you don’t want. Be careful not to pick someone you “like” who can’t pay you. See my post yesterday for more on that. Feel icky to start getting specific? It can. It’s ok. Do it anyway. 3) Messages. It’s what you say to your ideal customer in response to their hopes, fears, worries, and insecurities. It’s matching their problem with your solution in a graceful way. You can’t just encourage people to buy your stuff. Or put your name out there. You have to intimately understand the root problem that your customers want to solve. And speak to it. Is this hard? Not when you’ve done a good job on building your ideal customer profile. 4) Consistent branding and positioning. Your brand is how people perceive you and how you position yourself in the marketplace. It’s not just your logo or colors, it’s the message, the experience, and the promise you make to your customers. Your positioning shows how you’re different from the competition. A confused brand will lose sales, and inconsistent messaging will turn potential customers away. Your branding must align with your message, your customer, and your offer – every time. 5) Data-driven adjustments. You can’t fix what you don’t measure. Tracking your results allows you to know what’s working and what’s wasting your money. Data will tell you where to focus your efforts, what needs to be adjusted, and what needs to be eliminated. Set clear, measurable goals. Monitor them. Then tweak, test, and optimize based on the results. Successful marketing strategies aren’t static – they evolve with the data. As for actual tactics (which I bet you thought this post would answer!)… I can’t answer that in a post. Every business is different. Every offering, every customer base. 📌Here, my workable marketing strategy that has made me millions.📌 Marketing is not all about praying, fasting, and hoping that magic happens and you make sales. It requires strategic action. The most significant difference between marketing that makes you earn millions of dollars, from a marketing strategy that is just a waste of time, energy, and money depends on just one thing: a few simple yet incredible marketing metrics. These metrics are so basic that many people ignore them and end up not getting their desired results. But, they are super effective and you can use them to get the most results out of your marketing. What are the metrics? 📌 First, the correct numbers to track. When it comes to marketing, there are usually so many numbers to sort out, and because of that, many business owners find it tiring. But then, you cannot get it right if you miss out on numbers. So, you must track the numbers to get it right. 📌Next up is your budget. You cannot just wake up and say, "I want to spend $30 on marketing," when you've not sat down too carefully to map out a plan on how to split the money. Your marketing budget should be far less than the profit you'll make from the marketing results. 📌Once you have your budget intact, the following metric to consider is CPM. This means Cost Per Mile, which indicates how much it will cost you to get a certain number of impressions. Every marketing platform has its CPM, and you need to figure it out to know the exact cost and understand what works best. 📌Impressions occur anytime your ad appears on a customer's news feed. This means that even if they don't click, it will still count as an impression. The good thing is that the more impressions you get, the higher your chances of making good sales. But guess what? Those impressions, no matter the number, are not helpful if people don't take action. Your call to action could be clicks, calls, or direct buying. Imagine struggling to get to the front of a queue in a bank only to realize that you were in the wrong queue. Super frustration. So, as much as you need impressions, you need the right ones. 📌 Lastly, the CPC "Cost Per Click." You can measure this by dividing the number of clicks by the total amount you spent in your budget. You can also use the CTR, click-through rate, which is the percentage of people who clicked on the ads. You can do this by dividing the total number of clicks by the number of impressions. Doing this will help you track how many actions you have. To get the final result from your marketing metrics, you'll divide the CPA, cost per action, and the total amount you spent on the ad. With these, you'll be able to work out the conversion rate to know how the sales performed. Try these metrics this month, and thank me later. You'll be glad you did.
