Do you know what we learned from reading 4000 Glassdoor.com reviews about the Big Four? That Ernst & Young (EY - shown in blue) is the only one that is clearly separable for some reason.. The rest (KPGM, PwC, Deloitte) are so similar that our GroupFinder cannot tell them apart. But why? It's hard to tell at first glance.. But they (especially group 4 & 5) complain the most about work-life balance (or the lack of) both in scores and written text. They also think the worst about senior management compared to other firms and refrain to say anything about the CEO the most. Finally, the share of reviews coming from early (1-3) and mid tenure (3-5) people is also a lot higher. And just like that, my chapter at KPMG has come to a close as of December 4. What a journey it’s been—filled with challenges, caffeine, and the occasional “why did I agree to this?” moment! ☕💻 From navigating tight deadlines to perfecting my “Can we circle back on this?” game, this experience has been nothing short of transformative. Along the way, I picked up some invaluable lessons: 📌 Learning Never Stops: Whether it was mastering new tools or figuring out how to survive back-to-back meetings, the growth never paused. 📌 Feedback is a Superpower: Honest feedback from peers and mentors helped me sharpen my skills and (hopefully) fewer typos in emails! 📌 The People Are the Real MVPs: Colleagues who doubled as lunch buddies, sounding boards, and occasional therapists—you made this ride unforgettable. Thank you, KPMG, for the incredible memories and growth. Every day presents new challenges and opportunities to grow, pushing me to expand my knowledge and skills. From understanding complex client needs to mastering the intricacies of specific software or process, the experience has been intellectually stimulating and rewarding. SABKA SATH SABKA VIKAAS 🤝👥 The collaborative culture at KPMG US is one of the standout aspects. Working alongside some of the brightest minds in the industry, I’ve been able to learn not only from my own experiences but also from the diverse perspectives and expertise of my colleagues. The support and mentorship I’ve received have been invaluable in navigating the initial phase of my career. "I’ll never work for a Big Four."   That’s what a younger me once thought. Yet here I am, with LinkedIn reminding me to celebrate my 8-year journey at KPMG Belgium 💙 —and, even more exciting, my promotion to Director! 🎉 Looking back, I vividly remember those early days. Coming from academia, I was thrown into a new world of policies, procedures, compliance, risk management, timesheets, tight deadlines, and last-minute changes. It was overwhelming at first, and I struggled quite a lot, but I’m so grateful I took that leap . Over those years, KPMG has been much more than just a workplace. It’s a company that upholds quality and integrity above all else, fosters a culture of collaboration, works intensively on diversity and inclusion and encourages every individual to seize opportunities and grow both professionally and personally. KPMG has been the place that made a difference to me . Today I attended PwC’s Insight Day focused on Strategy and Consulting where I learned a lot about key skills that are crucial in the consulting world. These included (but are not limited to): strategic thinking, data analysis, and effective client communication. The panelists highlighted that these skills are not just valuable in consulting; they are transferable to any role I may pursue in the future. The emphasis on problem-solving and adaptability really resonated with me, as I know these are essential in today’s fast-paced work environment. A huge thank you to Sam, the director on the panel, for sharing his insights on navigating the challenges of his working career. It’s important to have a clear understanding of what the job entails, and this perspective was incredibly helpful. I also found it encouraging to read about PwC’s recent initiatives and positive media coverage, particularly their commitment to innovation and sustainability. It’s great to see a company leading by example in both business and social responsibility. After a roller coaster ride, I’ve decided to part ways with PwC. Reflecting on my time as a management consultant, I realize how much this experience has shaped me. Consulting is no easy feat; it's a realm far different from product or program management that many aspire to. Inspired to learn and be part of M&A during strategy class in B-School, I found the real-world experience even more exhilarating. The concept of transaction to transformation was something I never heard of but found to be a brilliant idea—saving millions for clients and creating the right opportunities for them. The due diligence involved is high burnout but incredibly rewarding, uncovering synergies, costing, and whatnot. One of the highlights of my tenure was being introduced to GenAI and becoming a brand ambassador. Even though the stint was short, the experience was immensely enriching. The potential uses of GenAI in consulting are vast, and I’m proud to have been at the forefront of this innovation. Serving on the Staff Council was another proud achievement. Helping employees voice their concerns to leadership was a responsibility I took seriously, and I hope I made a meaningful impact in improving their experiences. Working on short-term projects with diverse teams has been a whirlwind—demanding yet profoundly educational. While not every interaction was smooth, these experiences have molded me into a more resilient and adaptable professional. Amidst the difficulties, I was fortunate to meet a few remarkable individuals who genuinely made a difference and left a lasting impact. As I move forward, I carry with me the lessons learned, the skills honed, and the memories made at PwC. In light of recent events, it's important to avoid generalizations or unfair criticisms of EY as a whole. The firm has significantly contributed to my career development, and it holds a special place in my heart among all my employers. We should not let isolated incidents overshadow the valuable opportunities EY continues to provide. I am truly saddened by the loss of our colleague, but it’s essential to recognize that the decision to work long hours often reflects individual preference and passion. Just as doctors dedicate themselves to saving lives, many professionals, including CAs, commit to their work to enhance the financial health of their organizations. I feel fortunate to have begun my consulting career at EY, and I sincerely appreciate the experiences and opportunities the firm has offered me. Some of the standout qualities of working at Ernst & Young include: - Time off is valued at EY, and my partner and counselor consistently support both planned and sick leaves. - While late hours may occasionally be necessary, EY prioritizes employee well-being alongside client satisfaction. In my 1.5 years with the firm, I’ve appreciated its strong emphasis on work-life balance. - The empathy and approachability of senior leadership. Despite their positions, they remain accessible and supportive, fostering a culture with minimal hierarchical barriers—something rare in many organizations. - I have witnessed EY’s genuine commitment to diversity and inclusion firsthand.
