🚚 The Future of Transportation is Closer Than We Think! Attended an eye-opening discussion with Peter Hafmar of Scania Group and Shawn Kerrigan from Plus, moderated by Jim Motavalli at the #WebSummit. The era of autonomous trucks isn’t a distant dream—it’s set to become reality by 2027! Key Takeaways: • Driver Shortage Solution: With a global shortage of 3 million truck drivers, autonomous trucks could be the game-changer that keeps our supply chains moving smoothly. • Real-World Testing: Autonomous trucks are already being tested on roads in Texas, Sweden, and Germany. Legal deployment is happening across most U.S. states, especially in the Sun Belt. • Efficiency & Sustainability: These trucks don’t need rest breaks and can operate more efficiently, leading to reduced energy consumption. Plus, the integration with electric drivetrains could significantly cut emissions. • Safety Enhancements: Advanced AI and sensor technologies (Lidar, Radar, Cameras) enable these vehicles to handle complex scenarios, potentially making our roads safer. Exciting times ahead for logistics and transportation! #AutonomousVehicles #AI #Logistics #Transportation #Innovation

Just finished testing a new system for #autonomous vehicles. Using the latest advances in computer vision, the system is able to process high frame rate input at different driving speeds while running on low power. As of now, detection works for standard road occurrences such as cars, buses, trucks, traffic lights... Future iterations will include more image feature detections and even higher processing capabilities. #AI #ML #automotive #automation #computervision

Where will automated vehicles be introduced first? is a question that has long been answered: controlled environments. Automated vehicles are omnipresent in our daily lives, carrying raw materials in mines, goods in factories and people at airports. Granted, all those applications are different to what automotive and tech-companies are trying to achieve: introducing automation into an completely uncontrolled environment. If it feels like a moonshot to go from a well-regulated completely controlled application of an Automated People Mover shuttling between two terminals at an airport to a hardly-regulated autonomous vehicle trying to navigate the streets of San Francisco surrounded by pesky pedestrians and bicyclists with all their unexpected maneuvers, you are right! And that's why it requires those huge investments and they/we are still not there yet... In 2016 (!) 2getthere introduced the below logic for incrementally increasing the complexity automated vehicles would need to be able to deal with. Still this appears like the most likely path to safe and profitable applications. Environments where there is (a degree of) control of the 4 key factors complicating operations, should be the first to be able to benefit from automated operations - whether they do, completely depends on how quick an industry is to embrace a new opportunity. Long story short: airside operations are a good example of a semi-controlled environment. There is a degree of control of all the factors determining complexity and given the shortage of staff and the effects on their health, an absolute necessity to automate. 🔧 Key Concepts for Safety🔧 In the world of autonomous systems and critical technology, ensuring safety during failure is essential. Here’s a quick breakdown of four important terms: 1. Fail-Operational: The system continues to perform its core functions, with at least nominal performance, even in the event of a failure—while maintaining a safe state. 2. Fail-Degraded: The system operates with reduced performance after a failure but still maintains a safe state, ensuring minimal impact on functionality. 3. Fail-Safe: In the event of failure, the system stops performing specified functions and shifts to a safe state, preventing further risk. 4. Fail-Unsafe: A system is fail-unsafe if it cannot maintain a safe state after a failure, posing a potential risk to safety and functionality. These concepts are vital in industries like autonomous vehicles, aerospace, and critical infrastructure to ensure safety and reliability under all conditions. 🔒 #SafetyFirst #AutonomousVehicles #SafetyEngineering
