The Swanage Old Lock Up and Water Pump, is a rare and well-preserved example of a historic lock up. These small buildings, often referred to as round houses or clinks, were used as temporary holding cells for offenders awaiting trial before a magistrate. The lock up at Swanage, located next to the Town Hall, is an excellent example of this type of structure, which typically features a small, windowless stone building with ventilation grilles near the eaves. Fewer than 300 of these types of lock ups have been recorded across the UK.
