When discussing child sexual abuse and exploitation (#CSA), the vocabulary must be respectful of victims and survivors, and should not diminish the severity of the crime. 📖 Inaccurate or inappropriate terms can harm victims and survivors by reinforcing stigma, leading to inadequate legal responses, and discouraging help-seeking. ❗ Terms, such as ‘pornography’, imply consent, while ‘child sexual abuse material’ (#CSAM) highlights the abusive nature of the depicted content. 💚 Protect Children advocates for clear consistency in the use of terminology that describes sexual violence against children to meet the best interests of the child. 📝 Read more about the importance of the correct terminology in our new blog post! 18 November, World Day for the Prevention of and Healing from Child Sexual Exploitation, Abuse and Violence. Globally, countless young individuals are victims of sexual misconduct and exploitation. Such violations are pervasive, cutting across all nations and societal strata. Children, especially girls, are at a greater risk of experiencing forced sex and sexual exploitation, abuse and violence, including both online and offline, and it’s also a common situation during armed conflicts. #Protection #Prevention #Healing

Let's not remain silent when our children are suffering behind closed doors, in schools, neighborhoods, and villages. Onset Of Child Sexual Abuse. Most self-reported victims of child sexual abuse (CSA) are harmed by peers or known older youth. Most adults with attraction to youth became aware of their sexual interests in early adolescence, with the average age of first-time sexual perpetration being between 11 and 16 years. Young perpetrators can change: the re-offense rate for older youth who sexually harm children is lower than the rate for other types of crimes. Youngsters at risk will contact a helpline about sexual questions and issues for youth, suggesting such services should be rolled out. Today, we commemorate #BlueUmbrellaDay to raise awareness of how to better care for boys and protect them from sexual violence. 👉 1 in 13 boys around the world are subject to sexual abuse (https://lnkd.in/gURcHVrS). 👉 Boys are at a higher risk of experiencing sexual extortion (Canadian Centre for Child Protection Inc.). 👉 21% of anonymous child sexual abuse material offenders in the #darkweb search for CSAM depicting boys (Protect Children). 👉 2022 was marked by 137% increase in the volume of #CSAM depicting boys (Internet Watch Foundation (IWF)). Sexual violence against children is a gendered issue. We must continue incorporating a gender lens in our work to identify effective ways to protect all children from the risk of victimisation and provide tailored support to those already affected by this crime.
