𝐕𝐞𝐥𝐨𝐜𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐌𝐢𝐧𝐝𝐬𝐞𝐭 𝐢𝐧 𝐀𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 Last week, at the Golden Gate Breakfast Club (GGBC), sales expert and author Ron Karr spoke about Velocity Mindset which is the name of his book. It is a compelling exploration of leadership and personal achievement, offering a fresh perspective on accelerating success. Ron masterfully outlines the barriers that often hinder leaders and provides insightful solutions to overcome these challenges. Ron’s stories of his own and parents’ challenges were dramatic and humorous. His book is structured into three pivotal sections: identifying the right goals; overcoming obstacles; and focusing on the success of others to align with the end result. This framework is not just about achieving personal success. It is also about propelling others towards their goals, thereby creating a culture of velocity within organizations. After listening to Ron, I turned my attention to how this relates to my business, which is to help executives, engineers, and sales teams improve the results they want through their presentations. Velocity, in its essence, is not just a measure of speed, but rather the swiftness with which ambitious professionals move in a specific direction. To be overly poetic, think of it as a symphony of direction and magnitude playing in harmony. 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐄𝐬𝐬𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐕𝐞𝐥𝐨𝐜𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐢𝐧 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 The velocity of your communication is a profound force that propels your ideas, examples, and words across the “void of distraction” from your audience’s pull of distraction and disinterest. Directional Impact: Just as velocity gives direction to an object in motion, understanding the “velocity” of your speech helps guide your audience’s thoughts and emotions in the direction you intend. Momentum of Engagement: The velocity of your presentation determines the momentum with which your audience engages. Too slow, and you risk losing them to the pull of boredom. Too fast, and your message might sound exciting, yet is quickly forgotten. In the end, velocity is not just a concept to understand, but rather a force to master. Dozens of people openly embracing one another 🫂, crying aloud and tears flowing freely. 😭 This was not a scene from a therapy session, but I would not blame anyone for having this first thought. Weeks before this scene played out, I received a call from my boss who informed me to attend a sales leadership course organised by our business partner. I was looking forward to a relaxing transition to a new role at that time, so I had serious thoughts about withdrawing from the course. Eventually, I went ahead because I was curious about what the course is all about. I was given a book "𝙄𝙩'𝙨 𝙉𝙤𝙩 𝘼𝙗𝙤𝙪𝙩 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝘾𝙤𝙛𝙛𝙚𝙚" 𝙗𝙮 𝙃𝙤𝙬𝙖𝙧𝙙 𝘽𝙚𝙝𝙖𝙧 to read as part of the pre-course assignments. I enjoyed it and would highly recommend it. I had attended dozens of courses over the years, but this one left me with the deepest impression as this was unlike any other course that I have participated before. Why? 1️⃣ Most courses aim to develop specific technical or interpersonal skillsets, but this one focused primarily on self-authenticity, bringing your true self to work and how to care for and develop your team. 2️⃣ Most courses have minimal engagements from the participants, but the level of engagement in this course was really high, and it was eye-opening to listen to the personal stories and struggles that many participants volunteered to share. 3️⃣ Most courses do not have half the senior management team fully engaged together with the participants for a whole week. Every now and then, I would peek at the group and I could see the serious faces and fixated gazes, and the most telling sign is that I did not see any of them using their phone even once during the sessions. And last, but not least, 4️⃣ No other courses was this emotional that most of us were crying and offering comfort and support to each other for a full 15-minute after a heart-tugging presentation. ❌ I used to be extremely task-oriented in a not-so-positive way, but: 🫶This course broadened my perspective and increased my empathy level by many folds. I became more acutely aware of the struggles of others, and more conscious of my role as a leader to provide care and support to my team, especially during difficult times. ❤️ I held regular 1:1 sessions with my staff, before I even knew what they were. In these sessions, I refrain from discussing work and for those short periods of time, it was just me and the staff behind closed doors, in a safe space. It took a while for me to break the shields, but once the trust was formed, we started having more heart-to-heart talks with plenty of genuine sharing. I was remarkably surprised that the staff's performance improved noticeably after that. I am glad my inner voice stopped me from withdrawing from this course.
