Optimal Counsel LLP's 2L Summer Fellowship kicked off this year in June, with the excellent Cole Horton joining us this summer from Duke. We're now reviewing applications for Summer 2025 and encourage any interested rising 2Ls to e-mail us at [email protected] with a Resume and 1L Transcript. Details about career opportunities at Optimal, including our recruiting requirements, are available here: https://lnkd.in/gZBQpZV8 A lot of elite boutique law firms like to pretend that the *absence* of junior attorneys is some kind of positive. We fully disagree and have disagreed for a very long time. Some of our (now) senior attorneys have been with our team since their 2L year in law school and we're all the better for having those "lifers" on our team. For boutique law firms to scale and play a meaningful role in the market, they must recruit and train juniors. And with the right technology and learning infrastructure, having those juniors around maximizes efficiency for clients, who don't need or want Partners doing "the basics" when a well-trained junior will do. Our 2L Fellow program is a win for our firm and a win for high-performing ambitious law students who want something different (*very* different) from the classic BigLaw path.

Being a summer associate in 2021 meant a remote experience for my entire class. My firm sent me a laptop and monitor, and I set up in my law school's library for the summer. There are benefits and drawbacks to any situation, but the biggest downside to that summer was the lack of face-to-face interaction. We did the best we could with the cards we were dealt. I still made some connections, but nothing like I could have had we been in-person. So my advice to summer associates is take advantage of the opportunity to make connections this summer. The relationships you build this summer will prove invaluable when you are navigating associateship post-graduation. Go to all the events. Get people to talk about themselves. And remember their names. #summerassociates #younglawyers #biglaw #connections #networking

Being in courtrooms over the past month has made me realize that it's possible to remain completely calm even while observing criminal jury trials. During the first couple of days of my internship, I attended my first two hearings and vividly remember feeling extremely nervous and anxious about the cases. Although I wasn't the attorney defending the case, sitting on the defendant’s bench, or testifying under oath about the most shameful experience of my life, I still sensed the tension, emotions, and frustrations of all parties involved in the process. It was intriguing to witness how people sometimes create stories and exaggerate details, and to discern who was being truthful. After a couple of weeks, that initial stress dissipated, and I found myself increasingly comfortable spending time in the courtroom, observing everything from straightforward criminal hearings to lengthy jury trials on a variety of issues. I learned even to do some of my work assignments while observing. I became so accustomed to being present during hearings that I'm now considering attending more hearings at another court during the semester when I have time! Would anyone be interested if I compiled a general overview of errors that lawyers commonly make when submitting legal documents to the court? Or possible mistakes to watch out for while in the courtroom? I think that the fresh view might be useful for many because there is always the room for improvements. But, you tell me if you need it! #lawschool #lawclerks #judicialintern

Treat your summer-associate experience like an improv performance. To the summer associates starting their new positions, keep in mind the rule-of-thumb many improv comics employ: "Yes, And." Walking into my first summer job, I felt like a fish out of water. So many of my law-school peers had studied pre-law in undergrad; had already interned for firms; and/or had family members who practiced. I, however, had a rhetoric degree; some teaching experience; and a firefighter father and a social-worker mother. Although I now realize that my semi-unique background is a strength, as I walked into the first summer-associate meeting back in 2021, I felt like I didn't belong. I was therefore determined to never appear out of place. This mentality didn't entirely hinder my experience. It encouraged me to say "yes" to almost any project an associate or partner offered me, which I always recommend. Exposing yourself to a variety of practice areas and assignments is the point of a law-school summer job; it helps you ascertain what you want your future career to look like. But trying to appear knowledgeable regardless of the situation meant I didn't seek necessary information. I avoided asking whether the assigning attorney knew of helpful resources or seminal cases to provide guidance on the project. I didn't reach out for clarification if I felt that I was missing pertinent facts. I agreed to any project without posing follow-up questions. I said "yes" but dodged the "and." It wasn't until I switched from a yes-man mentality to a yes-and mentality that I truly benefitted from my summer experience. I learned new tips and tricks to expedite the research process, my drafting time shortened, and I started to build more rapport with the firm's attorneys. So, say yes to the projects, even the ones seemingly outside your zone of interest. But follow the "yes" with "and," asking questions to ensure you understand the scope and particulars of the assignment. Being inquisitive doesn't make you amateur, inferior, or unintelligent. It doesn't make you look out of place. It makes you a lawyer. And asking the right questions? Well, that makes you a darn good one. #newlawyer #firstgenlawyer #summerassociate

Exciting news! I've been accepted into the 3-week summer intensive in Legal Technology & Operations at the Bucerius School of Law in Hamburg, Germany! As someone who's passionate about the intersection of law and technology, I can't wait to dive deeper into the impact of artificial intelligence on the legal field and the world at large. My interest in A.I. and its potential in the legal industry inspired me to start "The No BS A.I. Law Blog" this semester. My goal is to encourage law students and professionals without science backgrounds to explore the legal tech space. I firmly believe that technology, data, and A.I. will play a crucial role in the future of legal debate. Join me on this journey by checking out my blog (launching soon), and stay tuned for updates on my experience at Bucerius School of Law this summer! #LegalTech #ArtificialIntelligence #FutureOfLaw #BuceriusSchoolOfLaw
