Aim for accountability : 📢 Advocacy for change in legislative and/or regulatory texts, particularly in terms of harm reduction, must absolutely rely on formal or informal community-based organizations (CBOs), and local communities (elected and local leaders), so that it is not « above ground », with results parachuted onto the beneficiaries and populations. The building must be built like a pyramid with a wide base.

Why do Municipalities large and small all suffer from a lack of funding from the UCP government? Is Innisfail and Olds caught up in an attack on the large municipalities? Record population inflow continues to pressure the Infrastructure in these Municipalities. When oil royalty revenue and exports reach all time highs, why does the UCP raise taxes and mistreat citizens living in our cities and towns?
📢📢📢 ADVOCACY ||| Provincial cuts impact every municipality in Alberta, but are especially challenging in Edmonton. The provincial government needs to consider Edmonton’s unique circumstances and ensure our city receives equitable funding to support our growth. As Mayor, Amarjeet Sohi has been busy expressing the City's needs to our government partners through letters, calls and numerous meetings. You can read his recent letter to Alberta Premier Danielle Smith here: https://lnkd.in/gmGA-rEb

Congratulations to the International Budget Partnership for the launch of the Open Budget Survey 2023 yesterday. Exciting to see governments like #Indonesia and #Guatemala embracing and winning elections based on these democratic principles. Interesting also to hear how activists and unions are using economic arguments and #openbudgets to increase citizen engagement in closed spaces and hybrid regimes. There is still a lot of work to be done though, especially related to #transparency and opportunities for citizens to participate in the budget process. What strikes you the most in this survey? Why are engagement levels low? Survey results: https://lnkd.in/enxWRHFJ Open Government Partnership CIVICUS: World Alliance for Citizen Participation #OpenGovWeek #OBS2023
The latest Open Budget Survey (#OBS2023) round is our biggest one yet-- it covers 125 countries, which are home to 7.5 billion people (95% of the world’s population) and included budgets totaling more than $33.5 trillion in spending in Fiscal Year 2022 alone - Austin Ndiokwelu, International Budget Partnership's Director of Policy and Global Advocacy. #openbudgets
