Researchers from New York University trained an AI model on just a fraction of what a child experiences in their first two years and found that the model could learn a substantial number of words and concepts—just like a child would. Using headcam video recordings capturing only 1% of a child’s waking hours, the team showed how AI can link words to visuals, offering new insights into early language acquisition. This study challenges long-held beliefs about how much data is needed for effective learning and opens the door to better understanding how children develop language skills. For example, when only the numbers in a question are changed, the models’ performance drops significantly. Additionally, when the complexity of questions is increased by adding extra clauses, even if the clauses don’t affect the final answer, performance declines by as much as 65%. This suggests that the models aren't really "thinking" through the math—they’re repeating patterns from their training data. Ultimately, the study shows that while LLMs seem to be getting better at math, they still struggle with true logical reasoning, especially as problems become more complex. #AI #LLM #machinelearning #machinereasoning #mathematics
