Last month, I attended the OMD Digital Health Conference. As I reflected on the keynote addresses delivered by Dr. Jane Philpott and Helen Angus, I was reminded that we have been talking about this transformation for years. We saw the gaps in Ontario's healthcare system, initially as patients falling through transition-of-care cracks and our lists of patients needing primary care becoming longer, but inertia prevented us from acting and we tinkered around the edges. Then along came Covid, and now these gaps have reached a critical level. In marketing, we talk about the impact of crisis on causing change and increasing adoption of new ways of doing things. We've reached that crisis level and I am hopeful that the steps we are finally taking now, including increasing HHR capacity, paying attention to the human side of both our providers and patients, and embracing technology, will enhance capacity to deliver better and more efficient care. And we know there's much more to do... Let's work together to finally revamp our healthcare system instead of just continuing to talk about it. Astute words from Dutch Rojas. Will there be unethical physicians? Of course, but they won't be alone. Like other healthcare bad actors, they should be exposed and dealt with appropriately. This notion that POHs and other physician-led business and innovation endeavors are ethical bridges too far is a diversion pushed by those looking to protect their own interests. Put more succinctly, it's protectionist fearmongering. Data suggests these fears aren't warranted. Physican-led VBC models like ACOs and bundled payments outperform those without physician leadership. Doctors with autonomy, ownership, and representation are happier and more effective than those without. POHs deliver high quality, cost-effective care. Concerns over cherry-picking are valid but not widely supported by the literature. Increasing regulation, declining reimbursement, and rising overhead have reduced physician autonomy and ownership. Our healthcare system is demonstrably worse for it. Few could rightfully argue that we're better off now than we were before these regulations went into effect. We've thrown any number of policies, programs, and care models at the wall -- not many have stuck. All options should be on the table. Otherwise, one can only assume efforts to "fix" healthcare aren't being pursued in good faith. #medicine #healthcare #health #healthcarepolicy (Look for my discussion with Dutch on these issues on an upcoming The Surgeon's Record webinar presented by Commons Clinic!)
Why do we trust doctors with our lives but not with running hospitals? The logic is as twisted as a pretzel. Regulations like the moratorium on physician-owned hospitals have turned our most qualified healthcare professionals into highly educated paper-pushers. It's as if we've decided the best way to improve restaurants is to prevent chefs from owning them. Absurd, right? These restrictions limit physician autonomy, stifle innovation, drive up prices, and compromise patient care. Imagine a healthcare landscape where physicians can innovate, create efficient care models, and truly put patients first. Where medical expertise drives business decisions, not just clinical ones. It's time to untie the hands of our healthcare providers. Let's empower physicians to not just practice medicine but to reshape the business of healthcare. After all, if we trust them with our health, shouldn't we trust them with the system that delivers it? #PhysicianAutonomy #HealthcareInnovation #MedicalEntrepreneurship Benjamin Schwartz, MD, MBA Wendy Dean, MD Brian Miller Frederic Liss, M.D. Joseph Rotella MD, DC Joseph Alhadeff Robb Linafelter Carlos Cardenas Stacie Monroe Jameil ‘Jay’ Pendleton™ Paul Slosar, MD, MHCDS Jeff Smith

Because everyone knows what Rx means right? Jargon in healthcare is rife and a constant barrier to patient engagement, equity of care, positive care experiences and informed consent (to name just a few). As a comms person who has been with health organisations for two decades, it never surprises me but continues to frustrate me. I recieved this text from Morrisons pharmacy today. It was actually adressing my 7 year old (started dear... *their name). "Your Rx is available for collection. " To be fair he might have had a better chance at decoding this 'patient-facing' communication 🙄. There's clearly a long way to go before accessible comms are in full swing in healthcare, but we have got to do better than this! Thankfully there are some fab people passionate about flying the flag for jargon free comms and highlighting the impact on patient care and safety. Sophie Randall Julie Smith Lotty Tizzard Miriam Levin Maria Dahm and many Patient Safety Partners, to name a few. If you made it to the end of my rant you get the answer to the code... Rx=prescription. I probably could have made that assumption but assumptions can be dangerous and plain simple language would have been easy to use. On a more positive note, this was the first time I'd recieved a text alert like this and the new (unexpected) service is actually a very useful and welcome one. So thank you Morrisons for that bit. I just need a glossary with it next time please.
