Talked with a colleague yesterday about something I see often in the healthcare leadership space: Leaders who “talk to talk” but don’t necessarily “walk the walk.” Extremely poignant and thoughtful external/public discourse that captures the hearts and minds of many, yet, act in opposition to those same words and values internally in their own organizations, behind closed doors. For example: 1. “Putting providers first” then undermining the needs most clinicians have, and pushing them further into burnout 2. “Revolutionizing American healthcare” or “Challenging the status quo” then propping up and promulgating the very structures and processes that make American healthcare terrible 3. Calling out big pharma, or big tech, or government intervention, then sitting on the board and advising those very same organizations 4. Appealing to the hearts and minds of clinicians, then putting their experiences and their critical front-line feedback on the shelf 5. Encouraging dissent and alternate viewpoints, then accusing others of being defensive or not “falling in line” with the company direction The list goes on. We have an epidemic of disingenuity. Leaders who say one thing because it’s the sexy or in vogue thing, then acting in direct opposition to those statements when the opportunity arises to live those very same values.
