For too long career education and development has adopted a top down approach. The government and industry have set the agenda while employability is positioned as an individual problem that requires an individual solution. However, as this report highlights, it is so important that we begin to listen to what young people actually want and need from a career education and development service. Not surprisingly, this report suggests that young people want to understand more explicitly the connection between what they learn at school and the skills and knowledge that will best equip them for success after school. One of the major issues that I think we are experiencing in secondary classrooms at the moment is that the curriculum alone is NOT preparing young people for the world of work or life after school. We spend so much time and energy focusing on the ATAR as if that is the outcome, not a step in a much longer and more complex journey. By focusing so heavily on academic performance, we are missing some important opportunities to engage in more meaningful discussions about employment transitions, labor market trends/ conditions and self- reflection.
