Thank you, Science Says and Thomas McKinlay 🎓, for highlighting our research article! This study explores the impact of imaginative displays on customer purchase behavior. Imaginative displays are created by arranging multiple units of the same product into visually appealing and innovative forms, which can either be themed (e.g., shaped to mimic an object) or unthemed. Our findings reveal that when the form of an imaginative display aligns with the perceived benefits of the product, it can significantly enhance customer purchase behavior and boost product sales. 🎓 Gimmicky product displays work - and sell People were 28% more likely to want to buy an energy drink when it was arranged in a battle tank display 🔬 In 2 field experiments and 4 online experiments, researchers found that: - When a candy store displayed boxes of chocolates in a cylindrical shape (vs a standard cube), sales increased 189.3% - Arranging tissue boxes in a quasi-circular cone caused a 53.02% increase in ROI - People were 15.64% more likely to want to buy toilet paper when it was stacked in the shape of a bear 🧠 Why? - Imaginative product displays look different and stand out making us notice them - We are also more interested in buying products with a novel or unexpected look - They also boost our brand perceptions - Which makes us more likely to interact with the product and buy it 📈 Display products in fun and imaginative shapes. Use the color of the packaging or shape of the product to stack it creatively. ✋ Careful: Do not clutter or make it difficult to take a product from the display - or the effect will backfire. 🎓 Want more science-based practical insights? - Follow me - Hit the bell icon 🔔 - Subscribe for free to Science Says, my newsletter
