What comes to mind when you hear "BSc in Sustainable Food Production"? Today, during a sales meeting, a Head of Student Recruitment shared a common challenge - demystifying certain degrees to prevent students from overlooking courses they might truly enjoy. "Sustainable Food Production" is a prime example. While it may conjure images of farming and fieldwork, these degrees encompass substantial economic, business, and scientific elements. Thank you, Dr Christian Reynolds for inviting me to give a guest lecture to your MSc Food Policy Students at your well-respected City, University of London. Your students were lovely to be with, and their contributions very insightful. Among other contributions, I was obviously very glad when the question of trade-offs came up. This is what makes policy-making both delicate and intriguing, and its outcomes far-reaching. As agrifood policy-makers, how to effectively balance competing interests within the socio-economic, technological, and political domains will remain central to the policy-making process. The narratives may be many, and yet policy must unambiguously achieve coherence... #Agrifood; #Policymaking; #Tradeoffs.

The summer edition of the FarmLink magazine is now available. An extract of my CEO's message follows: As we look back on 2024, it has been both a challenging and productive year. The past 12 months provided opportunities for growth as well as learning. More recently, mother nature has placed hurdles in front of those who had sowed their crops and have in recent weeks, been harvesting (or attempting to do so). Initially frost and more recently rain, have caused undue burden and economic pressure on many farms within southern NSW. Like you, FarmLink and our third-party trialists, faced similar challenges. Yet, our resolve ensured that we were able to complete the tasks that we were allotted. As we enter 2025, we do so with continued passion, commitment and drive. Our 12-month cycle begins, with the all too familiar ‘trials and tribulations’ that we face each year. But we will do so with enthusiasm, knowing the tasks and outcomes that we provide and undertake, results in the food security that the community expects. While the Temora Agricultural Innovation Centre (TAIC) site provides a commercial aspect to its operations, we must never forget that our core mantra is that of ‘research, development and extension’. This is illustrated in the comments from Councillors of the Temora Shire Council, in one of the articles in The Link, where they reflect on the passing of the mantle in 2007 from the NSW Government to the Council and, then to FarmLink in 2011. To paraphrase Cr Nigel Judd, the years of research and development at the then Government funded Temora Research Station benefited the farmers within southern NSW. This research was focused on the conditions that were faced and encountered locally and the studies provided answers that were suited to the local conditions. As Councillors determined, this was too important to lose. TAIC therefore continues a rich tapestry of farming research and extension services, with FarmLink being the current custodian of this legacy and the good maintenance of the farm itself. Part of the vision at FarmLink in RD&E, is our current review of the research projects that we are undertaking. We will concentrate on outcomes that are ‘farmer focused’. This continues our vision of assisting in the sustainability and profitability to farming enterprises that depend upon the innovations that we strive to achieve. Importantly, these RD&E projects should also reflect the mixed farming community in which our footprint covers. With the commencement of Dr Sue Hatcher as the Principal Research & Extension Manager, whose expertise as a research scientist is in livestock, provides an opportunity for us to expand our research, development and extension into all facets of the farming operations of our members. This will be developed more as we enter 2025 as we continue to review the research projects that we are currently undertaking, so as to ensure that they remain directly relevant. https://lnkd.in/gpwerRKG

Afternoon Nescafetime Questions! Why should the reputaion survey be linked to teaching as a parameter for ranking and quality? Who conducts the survey? How is it monitered? Who can guarantee that the outcome statistics are not massaged gently or harshly? Why dont HEIs show the survey and the way it was monitored? "World Reputation Rankings 2023 are based on the world's largest invitation-only opinion survey of senior, published academics. It asks scholars to name no more than 15 universities that they believe are the best for research and teaching in their field." Can this be fair? No mutual interests /benifits? Are you sure? Yes, I believe you!

journey to success:Navigating challenges from school to career. --- While rounding up secondary school, my initial ambition was to study petrochemical engineering. At the time, I had no idea that a course like Food Science and Technology even existed. I wrote JAMB four times and sat for post-UTME exams repeatedly, trying to gain admission to study my desired course. However, the admissions I hoped for were not forthcoming. Discouraged by the lack of progress despite my efforts, I turned to God in prayer, seeking direction and guidance about what to study. The answer I received was Food Technology. Honestly, it sounded strange to me. Nevertheless, I decided to give it a shot. I applied for JAMB again and, this time, I was offered admission to study Food Science and Technology. That’s how my journey into this field began—without even knowing what it was all about. By my second year, I was properly introduced to the fundamentals of Food Science, including principles of food processing, preservation, and packaging. This exposure sparked a passion in me to explore Food Science and Technology as a potential career path. One major challenge I faced was the Visual Basic and Programming course from the Computer Science department. I kept asking myself (and some of my classmates), "What is the connection between Food Science and programming?" This struggle stemmed from my complete lack of prior knowledge about the subject. However, with determination and a resolve to succeed, I worked hard and eventually excelled in the course. Today, that challenge is part of my story. After graduating, I secured a position at M-Savings and SME Investment, where I currently work. My role has come with its own set of challenges, including: ✅ Enlightening the production team: Educating team members on the importance of consistently adhering to safety protocols. ✅ Meeting deadlines: Balancing various factors in the production process to deliver tasks on time. Over time, I’ve learned to set clear goals and attach timelines to each unit operation. Additionally, I’ve developed crucial skills like: ✅ Leadership and teamwork: Motivating and guiding the production team to achieve common goals. ✅ Critical thinking and problem-solving: Tackling challenges effectively while remaining accountable. With determination and resilience, I am continually learning and growing. I am passionate about making an impact in the food industry and contributing to its advancement. #FoodScience #CareerGrowth #FoodIndustry #Day2of20@maryodili. -
