We tend to want to put our historical figures into simple categories: Hero/Villain, Genius/Fool, Tragedy/Comedy. In reality, all lives are a mixture where each 'plays many parts'. Einstein is a scientific hero, but he was a bit of a villain in some other ways. For example his, at times, dreadful treatment of his first wife is well known. In Einstein's recently published (2018,2023) travel diaries we are exposed to some of his less palatable and stereotypical views on the people of other countries. An example to give a flavour: Argentinians are 'unspeakably stupid creatures'(!) Apart from some absolute clangers like that, the diaries give insight into Einstein's personal life and aspects of travel and culture in the early twentieth century. Both volumes have extensive introductions setting the context and critiquing Einstein's views, and both are well illustrated (including images of each page of the handwritten diaries). If you want to read the history of science then dive straight into primary source material if you can get it (published letters, diaries, journals). It is easier to read, and can be a lot more interesting, than you might think!
