Doula vs. Midwife -- do you know the difference? And WHY are we so outspoken about investing in these birthcare resources?! Midwives and doulas both play crucial roles in providing support and comfort for birthing parents, but their roles are unique:⁠ ⁠ Midwives are clinically trained health professionals & birth experts who manage low-risk pregnancies, providing medical care from prenatal to postpartum. Doulas offer emotional support, comfort measures, and coping techniques to make your birthing experience as positive and empowering as possible -- but, you will still need an OB-GYN or midwife for all medical aspects.  ⁠ BOTH work together to ensure you have a safe and supported journey into parenthood. These are the types of resources that are considered luxury in our country, but could -- to put it simply -- increase our maternal healthcare EXPONENTIALLY. 🏥 Getting Midwives Back to Hospitals: A Call to Action 🏥 This recent study addresses the critical shortage of midwives in hospitals. Many midwives leave their jobs due to poor working conditions, with those in Germany leaving birth assistance roles after an average of seven years. The research explores midwives' job preferences to provide recommendations for retaining qualified professionals in maternity wards. Key findings reveal that while midwives are eager to provide birth assistance, they prefer to do so in midwife-led units rather than under physician supervision. A 15% pay increase could entice 16% of midwives to work under physicians, but 44% would still prefer midwife-led units. The March of Dimes released its US 2024 report card. Once again, the rate, 10.4% for 2023 births remains at a D+ grade. Poor and unacceptable for a 1st world country. With more rural hospitals closing, inadequate prenatal care is at a staggering 15.7% and will only increase. Let’s start improving access and support MOD “Mom & Baby Mobile Health Centers” and other solutions such as expansion of midwifery care. Documentation: The Backbone of Healthcare – But Why Isn’t It Paid? 🤷♀️ Yesterday, I witnessed a challenging birth. You can see the midwife documenting at 9:10 AM—her shift ended at 7 AM. What did she earn for this crucial work? €0. 📋 Why documentation matters: 💡 Traceability 💡 Safety 💡 Continuity It’s essential for the patient, yet it’s not compensated. Now, you might think, "Why should I care?" But imagine if the midwife said, "I’m not getting paid, so why bother?" This birth took over 4 hours in the pushing stage, filled with expertise, effort, and compassion. Without that dedication, the outcome could have been very different. The vaginal birth only succeeded because every second was spent caring for the patient. Sadly, I often see the opposite—healthcare isn’t valued as it should be.
