I am sharing critical insights about a threat group called VOLTZITE targeting U.S. electric utilities, emergency management, telecommunications, and other critical sectors. Dragos, a leader in industrial cybersecurity, has been tracking VOLTZITE since early 2023. Their research shows this group employs stealthy "living off the land" techniques to maintain persistence and evade detection for long periods. VOLTZITE has successfully exfiltrated sensitive OT data like SCADA configurations and GIS info that could be used for future disruptive attacks. Key recommendations to defend against this threat: 1. Implement continuous OT network monitoring with protocol-aware tools 2. Enforce secure remote access with MFA 3. Patch externally facing systems to close common entry points 4. Have an ICS-specific incident response plan to detect and respond quickly 5. Use defensible network architectures with proper segmentation As defenders, we must stay vigilant against threats like VOLTZITE that seek to undermine the critical infrastructure our society relies on.
