𝐀𝐧 𝐎𝐥𝐲𝐦𝐩𝐢𝐜 𝐃𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐦: 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐢𝐭 𝐓𝐚𝐤𝐞𝐬 𝐭𝐨 𝐁𝐮𝐢𝐥𝐝 𝐚 𝐓𝐨𝐩-𝟔 𝐇𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐛𝐚𝐥𝐥 𝐓𝐞𝐚𝐦 𝐛𝐲 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟖 When USA Team Handball set its sights on a top-6 Olympic finish, it was clear: we needed more than just raw talent. By 2028, the goals included: ↳ 40 elite athletes per gender in the national pool ↳ Regular high-level competition and international exposure ↳ Top-2 regional finishes for Olympic qualification 𝑪𝒖𝒓𝒓𝒆𝒏𝒕 𝑺𝒕𝒂𝒕𝒖𝒔: As of 2024, USATH is advancing steadily toward these targets. Currently, 6 players from the Women’s National Team (WNT) are competing with clubs eligible for international club competitions, such as the #EuropeanCup or #ChampionsLeague. Although only one of these players is currently professional, this exposure is a crucial step in building competitive depth. 𝑪𝒍𝒖𝒃 𝑷𝒂𝒓𝒕𝒏𝒆𝒓𝒔𝒉𝒊𝒑𝒔 𝒊𝒏 𝑬𝒖𝒓𝒐𝒑𝒆 We’re also in advanced talks to establish club partnerships in 🇫🇷 France, 🇩🇪 Germany, and 🇳🇱 Netherlands. These partnerships aim to station WNT pool players at specific clubs with a vision of developing them into professional athletes. Establishing these connections will be transformative, enabling our athletes to train and compete at the highest levels of international #handball. Building a competitive edge requires sustained resources, dedicated partnerships, and a shared commitment to #Olympic excellence. ➡️ Next Post: The Financial Foundation – Funding the Dream: https://lnkd.in/eyGwcsQk ⬅️ Previous Post: The Big Vision (2018 vs. Today): https://lnkd.in/eKJkbDuu

I’ve had some great conversations with Hendrik Schultze and the international Team Handball community focusing on growth specifically in the US leading into the LA28 Games. A significant hurdle in the US is the availability of training and competition venues. Exploring creative ways to repurpose underutilized spaces into thriving multi-sport hubs is an exciting opportunity for sports like Handball that often face challenges in accessing dedicated facilities here in the US. Here’s why this approach works: 1️⃣ Creative Transformation: From vacant supermarkets to empty warehouses, these spaces can be reimagined into sports facilities that benefit both local communities and emerging sports. 2️⃣ Multi-Sport Synergy: Incorporating Handball alongside sports like Volleyball, Futsal, and Pickleball creates dynamic hubs that maximize participation and sustainability. 3️⃣ Grassroots Growth: Repurposed spaces allow us to expand access, introduce sports to new audiences, and inspire the next generation of athletes. The examples in Lansing and Detroit highlight the potential of rethinking spaces for sport. Proof that there’s untapped opportunity still to be discovered. Do you have an idea or concept for a repurposed sports facility? If you’re exploring a vacant retail site, thinking about creating a multi-sport hub, or just have a bold vision to share, it would be great to hear from you. Feel free to reach out to me directly. There are exciting opportunities to turn innovative concepts into real-world facilities that fuel the growth of Handball and beyond. Together, we can create spaces that inspire, engage, and grow communities through sport! #Handball #SportsDevelopment #MultiSportHubs

David is currently collaborating with the United States Olympic & Paralympic Committee (USOPC) to address a 𝐜𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐧𝐠𝐞: 𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐟𝐲𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐯𝐞𝐧𝐮𝐞𝐬 𝐢𝐧 𝐂𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐧𝐢𝐚 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐛𝐚𝐥𝐥 𝐚𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐋𝐀𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟖 𝐎𝐥𝐲𝐦𝐩𝐢𝐜𝐬. What he shared with me was both eye-opening and indicative of the hurdles facing handball in the United States. 𝐇𝐞𝐫𝐞’𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲: Most sports facilities in the U.S. simply aren’t built for #handball. According to David, the first challenge isn’t just finding suitable venues—it’s finding any venues at all. The second hurdle? Locating or importing proper handball courts, since handball still struggles for recognition and resources in the U.S. David’s perspective reminded me of several exciting projects I’ve been involved in, where empty spaces were creatively transformed into vibrant sports hubs. For example: ↳ In 𝐋𝐚𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐠, Michigan, a former supermarket became a multi-sport facility hosting handball, futsal, volleyball, #pickleball, and gymnastics. I’ve even played a Pan American Games qualifier on a court inside this repurposed strip mall! - https://lnkd.in/esjWd3JU ↳ In 𝐃𝐞𝐭𝐫𝐨𝐢𝐭, my friend Joseph Williams has leased a vacant retail space and turned it into a thriving youth handball facility. With 200+ kids under 12 playing handball, Joe’s facility proves that handball hubs can be cost-neutral—or even profitable—while fueling grassroots growth. - https://lnkd.in/emNQC_zk 𝐀 𝐁𝐥𝐮𝐞𝐩𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐭 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐆𝐫𝐨𝐰𝐭𝐡 David echoed this potential during our discussion, reflecting on the opportunities to reimagine existing spaces for handball and beyond. David’s insights and my experiences point to a clear strategy: 𝟭. 𝗥𝗲𝗽𝘂𝗿𝗽𝗼𝘀𝗲 𝗩𝗮𝗰𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝗦𝗽𝗮𝗰𝗲𝘀: Turn underutilized retail or industrial spaces into multi-sport hubs. 𝟮. 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗺𝗼𝘁𝗲 𝗠𝘂𝗹𝘁𝗶-𝗦𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁 𝗠𝗼𝗱𝗲𝗹𝘀: Incorporate handball alongside other popular sports to maximize participation and revenue. 𝟯. 𝗜𝗻𝘃𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗶𝗻 𝗠𝗮𝗿𝗸𝗲𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 & 𝗔𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀: Building handball’s visibility will increase demand for dedicated facilities. The handball community, alongside leaders like David, is working to address these challenges. The goal? To ensure that by LA2028, the U.S. has the infrastructure not just for hosting handball at the Olympics but for inspiring a generation of players to take up the sport.

𝐑𝐞𝐟𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐁𝐥𝐮𝐞𝐩𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐭 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐔𝐒 𝐇𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐛𝐚𝐥𝐥 𝐆𝐫𝐨𝐰𝐭𝐡: 𝐃𝐞𝐭𝐫𝐨𝐢𝐭 𝐘𝐨𝐮𝐭𝐡 𝐅𝐚𝐜𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐓𝐚𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐒𝐡𝐚𝐩𝐞❗ I’m excited to share an inspiring development from a fellow #handball enthusiast and friend Joseph Williams. Joe and his brother have taken a major step towards growing youth handball in #Detroit. They’ve leased a vacant space in a strip mall and are transforming it into a dedicated youth handball facility. This is a practical application of the blueprint I’m trying to refine to grow handball systematically across the U.S. ✅ 𝐖𝐡𝐲 𝐓𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐌𝐚𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐬: 𝟭. 𝗚𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱-𝗨𝗽 𝗔𝗽𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗮𝗰𝗵 Joe is one of the few people truly committed to building handball in the U.S. from the ground up, investing his resources, time, and energy into making #youth programs accessible and sustainable. 𝟮. 𝗖𝗼𝘀𝘁-𝗡𝗲𝘂𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗹 𝗼𝗿 𝗥𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗻𝘂𝗲-𝗚𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗠𝗼𝗱𝗲𝗹 The facility is designed to operate at a minimum cost-neutral level, or ideally, generate revenue that can be reinvested into the handball community. Joe has over 200 children under the age of 12 playing handball in the Detroit area. This model shows the potential for self-sustaining youth sports facilities while promoting the game. 𝟯. 𝗔 𝗕𝗹𝘂𝗲𝗽𝗿𝗶𝗻𝘁 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗙𝘂𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 This project is one version of the handball facility blueprint I’m working on. By refining and sharing these models, I hope to create a scalable solution that can be adapted by other communities, turning vacant spaces into thriving youth sports hubs across the country. I’m incredibly grateful for Joe’s passion and commitment to expanding the sport, and I’m thrilled to see his approach aligning with the ideas I’m diving deeper into. This facility is a prototype—a real-life example of how we can build the future of handball together, and I look forward to seeing it take shape.
