Today is World Menopause Day—and only 18% of companies plan to offer meaningful support by 2025. This isn’t just neglect—it’s bad business. About 15 years ago, during my doctoral research, I found something that’s shaped my career: academic studies in innovation were "gender-blind" or "gender-neutral." Translation? Gender wasn’t considered a factor. Entire fields of research—and the technologies and products they produce—were built on the assumption that gender (and sex) don’t matter. To date, more money has been spent researching erectile dysfunction than understanding the menopause journey. We’re funding better sex while ignoring a natural transition that affects half the population for a significant portion of their lives. This isn’t just about health—it’s about systemic sex and gender biases. Menopause, like so many issues impacting women (and those with ovaries, such as some trans men and gender-expansive people), has been under-researched and unsupported. And this gap shows up painfully in the workplace. Most organizations are still unprepared to offer real support. The future of work demands we take menopause seriously. It’s time to close the gaps in research, funding, and workplace policies—for the well-being of all bodies. The term "Women+" is a recent discovery for me. Since my first day at iView Health Ltd I have emphasised to the team the importance of recognising that not everyone going through perimenopause and menopause identifies as a woman. I have noticed confusion when I bring up this point, but hearing about the experiences of individuals going through menopause while living lives that don't align with traditional gender norms has been eye-opening and challenging. For those who have known me for many years, you are aware of my strong advocacy for women's rights. I have even resigned from positions twice due to gender-related issues because I believe in creating environments where women are celebrated. However, in the world we live in today, it is crucial that we acknowledge and understand the diverse experiences of people living in ways different from our own. My goal is to establish a company where everyone can receive the necessary help and support for their health concerns regardless of their gender, age, social class, or location. Currently, we need to focus on and address the health needs of individuals with female biological sex in relation to menopause. Creating a truly inclusive and supportive environment for individuals going through menopause, regardless of their gender identity, is essential in promoting health and well-being for all. When symptoms of menopause wreak havoc on a woman’s quality of life, sometimes she feels like she has no choice but to take a step back from her hard-won career progress. In Canada, 86% of women aged 45 are working. But by age 59, only 72% of women are working – a 14% drop in the number of women in the workforce. Compare that to just a 10% drop in the number of working men between the same ages. We’ve come so far in our fight for gender equity in society and in the workforce – we can’t stop now. Is menopause still a taboo topic in your workplace? 💁♀️ As women, we face incredible challenges as we age, with our bodies going through a 360° shift—yet some women may feel expected to carry on as usual 🤔 Ever heard the label "time of the month"? It’s certianly outdated and dismissive in my opinion. A friend of mine had to present a major financial report while battling intense menopause symptoms—a real, often overlooked struggle.... Want to challenge the status quo? You could ask a male colleague to wear a Tens machine during a presentation and see how it goes... the outcome could be eye-opening. 😁 Thankfully, change is here UK employees now have the right to request flexible working. Under the Equality Act 2010, employers must make reasonable adjustments for menopause symptoms considered a disability - Again , get that Ten machine out if anyone struggles to comprehend 😂 This topic is close to my heart, and I’d love to hear your thoughts and stories. Empowering women means actively supporting them by listening to their needs. This includes open conversations about the possibilities companies can offer regarding menstruation and menopause. Unfortunately, many women experience discomfort and are unable to work due to these issues. However, by learning how to make small adjustments, an inclusive environment can be created where all individuals can thrive. In our final piece in the series, Kathryn Marshall dives into how we can open up the conversation about menopause at work. A recent CIPD report revealed 84% of people who are unsupported say their menopause symptoms have a mostly negative effect on them at work compared with 71% who are supported.   The difference between women in senior leadership staying and leaving their roles could fall down to how supported they do (or do not) feel at work.
