Dubai has announced a new program to provide funding for innovation, R&D, and support.   On September 15, a major leap forward for Dubai’s innovation landscape was announced by Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the Crown Prince of Dubai, Deputy Prime Minister, and Minister of Defence of the UAE. Through a new initiative unveiled on X, Dubai’s Research, Development, and Innovation (RDI) Program is set to receive a significant boost aimed at fueling the city’s quest to become a global leader in research and technological advancement. Sheikh Hamdan shared his vision on X, emphasizing that research and development are crucial for the prosperity of cities and nations. "Our goal is for Dubai to rank among the world’s top cities in nurturing researchers and scientists by providing the necessary funding, infrastructure, and regulatory frameworks," he wrote. The new initiative promises to deliver grants and essential resources to transform groundbreaking projects and ambitious ideas into reality right here in Dubai. This initiative underscores Dubai’s commitment to fostering a vibrant research environment. It targets enhancing domestic investment in R&D, optimizing private sector involvement, and aligning projects with the emirate’s strategic priorities. The Dubai RDI Program is designed to regulate and support research projects, boost engagement with both national and international universities, and tackle major local and global challenges through innovative solutions. In his announcement, Sheikh Hamdan highlighted the anticipated contributions from academics, researchers, and institutions worldwide. Case studies were never my forte, but with the right mentorship and support, what seemed impossible became achievable. I’m thrilled to announce the publication of my first case study in The CASE Journal by Emerald Publishing, an ABS-1 and Scopus-listed journal. This accomplishment wouldn’t have been possible without the encouragement and guidance from our award-winning case writer and facilitator at MAHE Dubai, Dr. Rajani Ramdas. Dr. Rajani not only inspired us to explore case writing but also conducted invaluable workshops that brought the process to life. Her mentorship, along with the support system at our School of Business, Manipal Academy of Higher Education - MAHE, Dubai, has been instrumental in this achievement. Case Overview/Synopsis: The case study examines the success factors of initiatives implemented by the Dubai Expo 2020 team, with a focus on sustainable transportation, energy efficiency, people-centric spaces, biodiversity preservation, water efficiency, waste management, green building and communication. Even though not all objectives were met, the overall progress demonstrates a strong commitment to sustainability and positive effects on environmental, social and economic aspects. In addition, the case study demonstrates how businesses can incorporate social and environmental factors into their decision-making processes, supply chain management and responsible procurement practices. It highlights the significance of sustainability in business operations, stakeholder collaboration and continuous improvement. Learning Objectives: This case study is designed for intermediate undergraduate students (third year) and first-year postgraduate students in courses related to sustainability, operations management, strategic management, supply chain management, and corporate social responsibility. The case facilitates: Cognitive skill development through the analysis of real-world sustainability practices. Affective skill building to encourage commitment to sustainable business practices.
