Breaking barriers to education and employment ━ California State University-Sacramento's new Guardian Scholars Promise guarantees admission for former #fosteryouth starting Fall 2025. This initiative tackles a critical issue: at 23 years old, only 55% of youth formerly in California's extended foster care program are employed, compared to 75% of their peers. #PRIDEIndustries, supports this mission by providing employment opportunities for aged-out foster youth. Together, we're creating pathways to #success and #independence. #HigherEducation #AwarenessWednesday Image: Graduate hugs a friend with diploma in her hand.

Foster youth are up against many hurdles in higher education and their future careers. According to Insight into Diversity, only 2 in 10 foster youth will go on from high school to college, compared with 6 in 10 of all college-bound high school grads in the country. This statistic has implications for these students’ earning potential. Only 1 in 2 former foster youth is employed within four years of aging out of the system. And for those with jobs, their average annual income is only $7,500. So, what supports do foster youth need? Foster youth face unique challenges in their educational journey, from school instability to limited college access. Our new report, “Understanding Belongingness, Support, and Perseverance,” offers valuable insights on how we can build stronger support systems in California to help foster youth thrive. In collaboration with young leaders from California Youth Connection, we ensured that the lived experiences of foster youth guided this study. This week, we’ll share their stories from the foster care system, high school, and college, along with our findings and recommendations. Our 2023 report on the critical role of campus support programs for foster youth was featured in an Inside Higher Ed article discussing California’s Middle Class Scholarship (MCS) for Foster Youth program, which was evaluated in a new report from the Urban Institute. While the scholarship has provided college access to many foster youth, these students often face barriers to eligibility due to academic progress requirements and part-time enrollment. Our report, “Foster(ing) Youth in the California State University: Understanding the Vital Role of Campus Support Programs,” underscores the inadequacy of financial support for these students and the lack of institutional resources, emphasizing the need for more comprehensive aid and support to improve enrollment and graduation rates for foster youth. A new Guidance was released from The U.S. Department of Education (USDOE) and the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services (USDHHS) on school stability for students in foster care on November 15, 2024. This guidance resolves some of the recurring problems in educational stability for students in foster care in Massachusetts and has a helpful section on addressing the disparity in the discipline imposed on students in foster care. If you represent any students in the legal custody of DCF, this is a must read. To read or download the full guidance, please visit: https://lnkd.in/eq7GbZys

With federal education funding at risk, investing in an equitable Foundation Aid formula is more critical than ever. As the Rockefeller Institute prepares to release its review on Sunday, we’re calling for updates that reflect today’s realities—covering the true cost of education and better supporting multilingual learners, students with disabilities, and those in foster care or temporary housing. Transparency matters. Equity matters. And we are ready to advocate for the changes students deserve this legislative session. 'Childism.' Does it exist in Scotland? Is it relevant to you? 'Childism' will be just one of the topics explored at the forthcoming Close Community conference in Glasgow. https://lnkd.in/ePbNVVE7 It is a topic I have never consciously considered until recently, although as part of a generation that experienced corporal punishment in school I now understand I was arguably a victim of Childism. Being 'belted' for losing a football match, for using too much space in a jotter when calculating fractions and for laughing in class were just some of my own experiences. As an adult with vast life experience I now understand my rights were violated, the punishment being a calculated strategy to maintain a power imbalance between adult and child and as much as it was the norm it certainly offered no positive impact on my learning or life. Do such cultural norms still exist and do they create other examples of 'Childism' today? Our formidable speakers - Sarah Ockwell-Smith, Suzanne Zeedyk and Leslee Udwin will propose that they do and I cannot wait to hear their thoughts. If your work involves engaging young people I hope to see you there on the day, I'd propose it is an event not to be missed. It is relevant to your sector. Don't just take my word for it, listen to one of our cast of speakers Leslee Udwin speak at the United Nations, https://lnkd.in/dYzV9e4J And when you find your socks afterwards, grab a ticket too. After all, "Education of the mind, without education of the heart, is no education at all." https://lnkd.in/ePbNVVE7 See you there. #TheCloseCommunity #Relationships #Education #EarlyYears #Glasgow Children & Young People's Centre for Justice (CYCJ) Education Scotland Cat Dalrymple Brigid Russell Jacquie McGeoch

Urgent Call for Change in New Brunswick Schools! I wholeheartedly support Advocate Kelly Lamrock, Q.C.’s push to end the use of seclusion rooms in our schools. These isolated spaces not only violate the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) but also undermine the principles of true inclusive education. 🔍 Why This Matters: 🔹Human Rights Violation: Seclusion rooms isolate and harm students, contradicting their right to a safe and supportive learning environment. 🔹Lack of Oversight: Without clear legal authority and proper monitoring, these practices are being implemented inconsistently and without accountability. 🔹Negative Impact: Isolation can be traumatizing for children, especially those with disabilities, and does nothing to address the root causes of behavioural challenges. 📢 What Needs to Change: 🔹Ban Seclusion Rooms: Remove these harmful practices from our schools entirely. 🔹Accountability: Implement mandatory data collection and public reporting to ensure transparency and adherence to guidelines. 🔹Support Systems: Invest in trauma-informed, evidence-based strategies that promote positive behaviour and student well-being. It's time to prioritize our children’s rights and well-being over outdated and harmful practices. - - - #InclusiveEducation #ChildRights #EducationReform #NewBrunswick #HumanRights #StopSeclusionRooms
