Against the back drop of the cost of living crisis (and other global crises right now) the net effect has been an inevitable de-prioritisation of sustainability in the consumer mindset and their purchase power. However, industry and organisational environmental goals remain, as well as the confines of operating within existing regulation and impending legislation. So the question is 'How can brands balance regulatory changes with the shifting sustainability awareness of their consumers?' Consumer sentiment around sustainability paints an alarming picture. Whilst temperatures soared to record highs in 2023, concern over climate change saw a significant drop. Results from our latest Consumer Compass report show that whilst inflation across Europe is on a positive trajectory, consumers remain cautious and therefore continue to prioritise their finances, pushing sustainability down the agenda. With just 1 in 10 claiming to be an early adopter of sustainable behaviours, it is evident that providing education, guidance, and incentive will be crucial in driving positive behaviour change.
