I recently undertook research focusing on the legal recognition of single mothers as guardians, particularly regarding the welfare of illegitimate children. This topic holds personal significance to me, as I believe in the importance of supporting vulnerable populations within our legal frameworks. My analysis highlighted a landmark ruling by the High Court of Bangladesh, which allows children of single mothers to be registered under their mother’s name alone. This decision challenges existing norms around guardianship, promoting gender equality and acknowledging the rights of single mothers and their children. It addresses the complexities faced by single mothers in a patriarchal legal system, where the father's identity is often unknown or absent. The ruling, while a significant step forward, also raises questions about societal acceptance and the potential for legal challenges. Furthermore, it emphasizes the need for continued legal reform to protect the rights of all children, including those born out of wedlock. This research adds to the discussion on gender equality and child welfare, supporting policies that promote the dignity and rights of every individual. #LegalResearch #ChildWelfare #GenderEquality #HumanRights #Guardianship

I recently sent formal letters to the Ministry of Gender Equality, Child Development and Family Welfare as well as the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Regional Integration & International Trade, urging them to support the retention of Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR) language in the upcoming Pact for the Future during the UN Summit of the Future taking place on 22-23 September 2024. It has come to my attention that references to SRHR, especially in relation to SDG 5.6 and universal health coverage for young people, have been omitted from the draft text. These omissions could jeopardize critical progress on gender equality, access to reproductive health services, and the protection of the rights of women, girls, and gender-diverse individuals. In the attached letter, I outline why it is essential for Mauritius to continue its strong commitment to gender equality and human rights by advocating for the retention of this vital language in the final draft. I urge those working in this area to please support this cause and advocate for the inclusion of SRHR in the Pact for the Future to ensure that the health, rights, and dignity of all people are protected.

"Reflecting on my journey as a Social Welfare Officer and Acting Gender Officer at Neno District Council, I'm reminded of the importance of community-driven initiatives. As I continue my Master's in Human Resource Management, I'm eager to explore innovative solutions that promote social welfare, gender equality, and community development. I'm excited to share two initiatives that are close to my heart: 1. Training male gender champions to lead the fight against gender-based violence. This aligns with the Ministry of Gender's innovative "male engagement strategy," recognizing that men must be part of the solution. 2. Empowering female aspirants through the "Nthawi Yawo" project, ahead of the 2025 elections in Malawi. This initiative, supported by NICE and CCSS, aims to increase women's political participation and leadership. Both initiatives demonstrate our commitment to creating a more inclusive and equitable society. Let's continue to support and amplify these efforts! #GenderEquality #WomenEmpowerment #MaleEngagement #NthawiYawo"

Im suddened by the Bill presented in the Iraq's parliament, this makes me wonder at what point do people stop putting children's rights in jeopardy? I strongly condemn the pervasive proposed legislation in the Iraq Parliament that seeks to lower the legal age for marriage. This bill represents a severe violation of human rights, particularly those of young girls who will be disproportionately affected. Legalizing child marriage not only undermines the progress the world has made in advancing gender equality, but also exposes children to severe physical, emotional, and psychological harm. We call upon the Iraqi government and international community to stand firm against this regressive measure and prioritize the protection and empowerment of children, ensuring that their rights to education, health, and their well being are safeguarded. #DonyaJusticeNetworkKenya #ProtectChildren #ChildRights #EndChildAbuse #ChildrenDeserveBetter #StopChildTrafficking #SaveOurChildren #EmpowerChildren #ChildrenFirst

PHARSAFER APPROACH TO OPPORTUNITY Call me weird or unconventional but when it comes to ability I am blind to gender; ethnicity; age; religious persuasion; orientation, or anything other than ability. As a Company that has been going for 21 years I have always only believed in a meritocracy. What you achieve and what you become is only down to merit and the pay is the same. Therefore, when I see International Women's Day I struggle because I think that everyone should be treated the same way, anyway. Therefore, anyone who works for us now or in the future, relax, because all you have to be is good at your job, nothing else to be paid fairly and promoted when you should be. Difference is to be embraced, not isolated and such differences add to the overall flexibility and strength in a team to bring different ideas to the table. So, in conclusion, PharSafer Associates Ltd promotes anything that means we are treated the same with respect and without bias and are rewarded due to ability alone. Well done World Health Organization for brining this into the open. #equalityforall #fairness #opportunity #PharSafer #drugdevelopment #drugsafety #pharmacovigilance #medicalaffairs #clinicaltrials #research #auditing #training

Aastha Dahal (PhD) and I interacted with around 70 members (with 16+ back to back meetings!) of the civil society from Gaidakot Municipality to assist the local government in drafting their Gender Equality, Disability, and Social Inclusion (GEDSI) Policy. We met doctors, police officers, educators, victims of the armed conflict, foresters, students, media personnel, cooperatives, persons with disability, the mayor, the deputy mayor and their staff to understand the current situation. We closely studied the existing budget to understand the current policy that guides it, and are now going to make recommendations through the GEDSI policy on the best way ahead for the people of Gaidakot! #goodgovernance #GESI #GEDSI

Congrats to The World Bank authors Natália Mazoni, @Silva Martins, Aylen Rodriguez Ferrari, and Amel Zahid, for explaining so cogently "why engaging men in care duties is critical for gender equality." Their piece explores the global shift towards greater paternal involvement in caregiving roles, emphasizing the impact of parental leave policies on gender equality and delving into some of the recent reforms taken in a number of countries, making it easier for men to take on more care responsibilities. The authors identify some of the barriers that seem to be hindering fathers’ uptake of paternity leave (e.g., societal norms, creating stigma and influencing workplace culture) and advocate for policy and workplace changes (including such incentives as job protection and cash bonuses), in order to support more equitable caregiving responsibilities. By implementing some of these recommended changes, CAN we actually shift societal norms and create more supportive environments so that fathers can be more deeply and regularly involved in their children's care?
