Around 25-30% of all the food that is produced worldwide ends up being lost or put into landfills. According to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, this food loss is responsible for about 8-10% of the total human-caused greenhouse gas emissions. Luckily, commercial bakeries and other food businesses can take several actions to reduce food loss and its impact on the climate. Some tips for doing so include: Only buying what you need Using or freezing leftovers Composting food scraps Localize supply chains to reduce transportation Upcycle ingredients into new food products Donate extra food to food banks and charities Join PRI Environmental on this International Day of Climate Action and look for new ways to reduce food loss.

Today, October 16th, we observe World Food Day, a global reminder that food is a fundamental human right. While we celebrate the abundance and diversity of food, let's also acknowledge the stark reality that millions around the world still face hunger and malnutrition. 🙌 💦 This year's theme, "Water is Life, Water is Food. Leave No One Behind," highlights the critical link between water and food security. As climate change and other factors threaten our water resources, it's more important than ever to ensure sustainable and equitable access to both water and food for all. Let's take action to create a world where everyone has access to safe, nutritious, and sufficient food. We can all play a part by: 🍎 Reducing food waste: Be mindful of what we buy and consume, and avoid throwing away edible food. 🌽 Supporting sustainable agriculture: Choose locally sourced, seasonal produce and support farmers who use eco-friendly practices. ✨ Donating to food banks and charities: Help those in need by contributing to organizations that provide food assistance. 📢 Raising awareness: Spread the word about the importance of food security and encourage others to get involved. 🙌 Together, we can make a difference in the fight against hunger. Let's work towards a world where no one goes to bed hungry. #worldfoodday #zerohunger #foodsecurity #leavenoonebehind #primespot

More food is discarded in the US than in any other country in the world. Food loss and waste is food that is not eaten, and happens throughout the food system, from production, processing and distribution to consumption. Juxtapose this with food insecurity, and the idea of rescuing food to fight hunger and food waste is a no-brainer. Check out this informative video on the Farm to Family Program and how food banks like Second Harvest of Silicon Valley play a major role in nourishing neighbors by preventing food waste - and helping to fight climate change. Interesting Fact: Food waste in responsible for 8% of all global carbon emissions. https://lnkd.in/gQH8724Q #foodwaste #climatechange #foodrescue #foodinsecurity

🌍Californians send 11.2 billion pounds of food to landfills each year. Food waste contributes to more than half of methane emissions from municipal solid waste landfills. Meanwhile, too many in our community struggle to afford healthy food. 🌍BFN is the largest Food Recovery Organization (FRO) in Northern Alameda County, each year diverting hundreds of tons of edible, surplus food to neighbors in need while saving the equivalent of 80 years of electricity consumption for one household! 🌍Food recovery is an important initiative that simultaneously addresses food security and climate change. However, the costs associated with sorting and waste hauling the unusable donations can be unsustainable for FROs, often lean nonprofits. 🌍In an effort to change that, we recently partnered with StopWaste and Cascadia Consulting Group to analyze the compost and waste at BFN. Follow the link below to see how this unique compost audit project could yield more support for food recovery efforts in our community. https://ow.ly/nyKY50RkhtU #earthday #foodrecovery

Together, we can tackle two of the most pressing challenges of our time: food waste and food insecurity. Join us for #WeRescueTogether, our 2024 campaign to raise $425,000 to support Food Rescue US’s mission of preventing food waste, delivering meals, and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. This past year underscored the urgency of our work: ➡️ Food insecurity in the U.S. rose 7% in 2023, impacting 47 million people. ➡️ Methane from food in landfills accounts for 10% of global greenhouse gas emissions, driving climate change and extreme weather. At Food Rescue US, we know these challenges are immense, but we are making a difference together: ✔️ 168 million meals have been delivered to those in need since 2011. ✔️ Over 1 billion pounds of CO2eq prevented by rescuing food from landfills. With your support, we can do even more in 2024: ⭐ Deliver 6.8 million additional meals to agency partners. ⭐ Prevent 9 million pounds of CO2eq from entering the atmosphere. Let’s create change—one rescue at a time. Donate today and join the movement to fight hunger and protect our planet: https://lnkd.in/e2eiVMxu
