I am very glad to share that our newly Edited Book "Consumer Perception about Labelling and Food Fraud Prevention", edited by Maria João Pinho Moreira, José M.M.M. de Almeida, Juan García-Díez and Cristina Maria Teixeira Saraiva has been officially published. The book discusses the concern by agri-food-industry and consumers about food fraud. It is a tremendous global problem which can have substantial implications for consumer health, safety, and confidence in the food industry. The lack of confidence in the food supply chain originates economic consequences for consumers and food producers. It is important to block food fraud implementing regulations and standards and also international efforts to enhance food safety and authenticity. This book covers crucial parameters about food fraud, specifically consumer perception, preventive legislation and prevention methods such as spectroscopy. https://lnkd.in/dZfMN928

A great article from Campden BRI on defending your business against food fraud which is costing the industry approximately €30bn annually. Suppliers are faced with increasingly tight margins, environmental, political pressures and economic pressures and food crime can quickly become an escape route. Its harm to consumers, food businesses and the wider food industry should not be underestimated, with up to 25% of global food safety incidents being traced back to food fraud.

Food fraud occurs when a food supplier intentionally deceive its customer about the quality and contents of the foods they are purchasing. While food fraud is often motivated by profit, some forms of food fraud can also pose a direct threat to the health of customers and consumers. Detecting food fraud is a challenge because consumers alone cannot detect them, and food fraudsters are usually innovative in the ways they avoid detection. In Asia and the Pacific, the risk of food fraud is estimated to be high, due to the high demand for premium quality food combined with an increasingly globalised food supply chain. This document describes the key aspects of food fraud, and discusses a set of measures that food safety authorities can take in order to stop the persistent problem of food fraud. Among these, legal interventions combined with the use of technological tools seem to be promising tools in combatting the phenomenon. The adoption of a definition of food fraud at the national level could support the identification of targeted actions, and the tools which help the alignment of national legislations and measures with Codex Alimentarius food standards support national food safety authorities in addressing the problem. #Food #fraud | Intention, detection and management #FAO

🚨 Tackling #FoodFraud, A Growing Concern in the Industry 🚨 Food fraud is a significant issue impacting food safety and consumer trust. It involves the deliberate adulteration, substitution, or misrepresentation of food products for economic gain. With increasing globalisation of the food supply chain, detecting fraud has become more complex, posing a risk to businesses and consumers alike. Examples from Australia, 🔍 #Honey Adulteration In Australia, honey has been at the center of fraud cases, with some products found to be mixed with cheaper sugar syrups. This not only misleads consumers but also harms the reputation of genuine honey producers. 🔍 #Seafood Mislabelling Studies have shown that up to 11% of fish sold in Australian markets is mislabelled, often substituting cheaper fish for premium varieties like barramundi. This deception can impact both consumers and the sustainability of marine resources. 🔍 #OliveOil Adulteration Premium extra virgin olive oil is sometimes diluted with cheaper refined oils. Consumers paying for high-quality olive oil may be purchasing a product that lacks the health benefits they expect. How can we combat food fraud? ✔️ Implementing robust #traceability systems across the supply chain. ✔️ Increasing food authenticity testing, such as DNA analysis for seafood. ✔️ Raising awareness and educating consumers to spot suspicious products. Food fraud not only impacts economic value but also risks public health and undermines the trust we place in the food we consume. Together, we can ensure transparency and integrity in our food industry. What strategies do you think are most effective in addressing food fraud? Let’s discuss! 💬 #FoodSafety #FoodFraud #SupplyChainIntegrity #QualityAssurance #AustraliaFoodIndustry

🚨 European Commission's March 2024 Report Uncovers Global Food Fraud, Highlights Efforts to Combat Malpractices The report includes various instances of seized contraband food products, such as seafood, meat, vegetables, and alcoholic beverages, as well as cases of adulteration, product tampering, and mislabeling. The report also highlights efforts to combat food fraud, such as the UK FSA's food fraud hotline and the review of laboratory analyses for herbs and spices. Additionally, it mentions an increase in meat smuggling in Switzerland and a Slovenian study on a food fraud case involving safety risks. Insights like these are easily monitored with SGS Digicomply's Horizon Scanning.
