*Speculation alert* While we wait for the UK Government to invoke the Civil Contingencies Act in response to the emerging Greggs card payments issue (https://lnkd.in/e_5saTpj), its worth taking a step back. Working it through with Mark Devereux and the team, there is a pattern here with McDonalds, Tesco, and Sainsburys all have very similar issues since Friday. Its worth noting that the disruptions have been random and rolling. There may be more organisations affected by this, and that these are the most public examples. Its also possible that we will see more disruptions in the short term. It is possible that its a payment services provider that is experiencing this issue, but we think that is unlikely. This feels like it is further upstream. For example, coincidentally, last Tuesday saw Microsoft release a large number of critical patches - https://lnkd.in/egZvyFHW. Recent major software updates could be the more probable source. Organisations may already be all over this, but if not, it would be worth reviewing which IT has been subject to recent updates that support the critical operations (or important business services in UK firms and FMIs) to establish if there are latent issues that need to be addressed. In the last four decades firm’s share price gone up 430 times compared with 25 times for the s&p 500 index of large companies. It has continued to outperform the market in recent years. What lies behind its enduring success? The Economist's Big Mac index shows the price of the McDonald’s burger in America has tripled in nearly 40 years, while Costco's hot-dog-and-drink combo remains steady at $1.50. Costco's success is attributed to its high-quality products at low prices business model, with a focus on keeping markups low, charging a fixed membership fee, and stocking fewer distinct products. The company's gross margins are around 12%, much lower than Walmart's 24%, but it makes up for it through membership fees, which netted $4.6bn in 2023. The membership model creates a virtuous circle by increasing buying power, leading to better deals with suppliers, and encouraging customer loyalty. Costco's limited product lineup of 3,800 distinct items allows for greater bargaining power, lower prices, and more efficient use of space, with sales per square foot three times that of Walmart. The company's own brand, Kirkland Signature, accounts for over a quarter of its sales, with higher margins compared to other brands. Costco's employee treatment, with higher wages, generous benefits, and promotion from within, leads to low turnover rates and high employee retention, with over a third of workers staying for more than ten years. #costco #retail
