The ancient Indian civilizations virtually lived and breathed the sustainability tenet, as seen in their #cultural, #environmental, #behavioral, social, religious and #governance philosophies. TERI School of Advanced Studies, and Delhi Management Association - #ESG Committee organized a round table discussion on “Self and sustainable development “on 8th June at TERI, SAS Campus. Thank you to all the panelists for their inputs and insightful deliberations. Here are the key takeaways from our discussion: ·        The self, or individual identity and consciousness, plays a critical role in driving sustainable development. Personal values, beliefs, and behaviors significantly impact how sustainable practices are adopted and propagated within societies.  Personal values influence consumer choices. People who prioritize sustainability tend to support products and companies that adhere to sustainable practices, thereby encouraging corporate responsibility. Self-awareness leads to behavior modification. Understanding the impact of one's actions on the environment can result in more sustainable lifestyle choices, such as reducing waste, conserving energy, and supporting local and organic food systems. Indigenous and local communities often have a deep-rooted understanding of sustainable practices, passed down through generations. Respecting and integrating this knowledge can enhance sustainable development efforts. Community initiatives, such as community gardens, recycling programs, and local conservation efforts, foster a collective sense of responsibility and shared purpose.  Community-led education and advocacy can raise awareness about sustainability issues and promote environmentally friendly practices at the grassroots level. Public Awareness Campaigns that highlight the importance of individual actions and their collective impact can motivate people to adopt sustainable practices. Digital Transformation and Connectivity: Invest in digital infrastructure to improve connectivity across the state. Promote e-governance and digital literacy to empower citizens. Foster innovation and entrepreneurship in the technology sector. Education and Skill Development: Enhance the quality of education at all levels, from primary to higher education. Establish vocational training centers to equip youth with relevant skills for employment. Encourage research and development in science, technology, and arts. Healthcare and Wellness: Strengthen healthcare infrastructure, including hospitals, clinics, and telemedicine services. Promote preventive healthcare measures and awareness campaigns. Invest in mental health services and well-being programs. Tourism and Cultural Heritage: Develop sustainable tourism by preserving historical sites, natural landscapes, and cultural heritage. The cost of system change Had a very interesting discussion with Raghav Nandakumar from Auroville Consulting on the state of #circulareconomy in India. Liked his whole system approach and the point that while bringing in and budgeting for circular economy one needs to be aware of the cost of system change. For example, bringing the informal sector ( waste pickers and collectors) into the mainstream is not just about giving them uniforms and identity cards but recognizing the political, economic, social and technical cost of such systems change. Auroville in case you never heard of it, is a community in Southern India that has experimented with #sustainability #sdg and #esg for the last 50 years !! So a consulting firm from such a community carries lot of practical, field experience that is rare to find among such organizations.

Through relentless efforts, FWWB engaged with women, their families, and community members to challenge and change these limiting mindsets, empowering women to embrace entrepreneurial opportunities thereby economically empowering them. FWWB's continuous efforts focused on understanding the unique needs of each beneficiary. Tailored support was provided in the form of business skills training, technology integration, market linkages, and access to credit. This comprehensive approach has significantly uplifted the economic status and self-esteem of these women, enabling them to break free from traditional constraints.
