Here’s why… Small business owners are not making enough money for the effort we are investing. I’ve worked with small business owners for nearly 25 years, and seen the finances of thousands of businesses.  We start out with so much passion, drive and purpose. We’re seeking freedom, creativity and to be a difference maker. But so many of us have issues with money that lead to frustration, overwhelm and inaction, and I want to get to the bottom of it. I interviewed 8 successful female founders to find out what’s going on in their minds and in their bank accounts. I asked the questions that no one else is asking, so we can dig below the surface on this important topic. I keep seeing so many parallels between the culture of work and the culture of parenting. We have intensive parenting – and intensive working! No wonder why the parents aren’t alright 🫠🫠🫠 To summarize this episode: parents are under immense pressure to ensure that their kids are set up for success (financially, socially, physically, emotionally, etc.) and invest in that pursuit to an unhealthy level because of cultural pressure, comparison, and lack of support. In the end, the journalists conclude that we can’t count on government support or policy to solve this – it’s going to require a change in culture. This is true for the culture of overwork too. Shifting the culture starts with recognizing the narrative we've unconsciously adopted. It requires unlearning deeply ingrained habits and connecting with a community that not only challenges traditional norms but also offers support as we navigate new ways of doing things. Industry Experience vs New Perspectives. What’s the right balance? A trend I have noticed in my job hunt is an emphasis on industry experience. It seems companies are valuing time spent in the industry over all else. While I can respect that I also have always thought that there must be downsides to cycling through employees who have been molded by the same pov and industry customs. It makes me question if there is space or desire for different perspectives. Roy Wood Jr, and the latest episode of #TheRunUpNYT (an excellent podcast I highly recommend) with Astead W. Herndon (an equally excellent host) perfectly encapsulates this thinking to me. As Roy, a comedian, creative, and film maker brings such reasonable, actionable, and intelligent insight to a conservation about politics and political culture. It is relevatory and now obvious to me that perspectives from outside the echo chamber are vital. Creatives, artists, and really anyone not influenced by the rhythms and customs of an industry can offer so much to any team or company. Does that mean you should hire a gaggle of comedians to lead on business strategy, probably not! But applicants who see the world slightly differently, who can see the wood for the trees, shouldn’t be underestimated. https://lnkd.in/eggM9MQF
