Azure Virtual Desktop (AVD), formerly known as Windows Virtual Desktop (WVD), is a Microsoft Azure-based system for virtualizing Windows operating systems. It provides virtualized desktops and applications securely in the cloud over the Internet. AVD is primarily aimed at enterprise customers rather than individual users1.   Here are some key points about Azure Virtual Desktop:   Access from Anywhere: AVD allows users to access their desktops and applications from virtually anywhere using any device with Windows 11 or Windows 10, Microsoft 365, and existing eligible Windows licenses2. Secure and Scalable: Organizations can create cloud-based virtual machines (referred to as “cloud computers”) that users can access via their personal devices and an internet connection. These virtual machines replicate the functionality of on-campus cluster computers used for teaching and research3. Multiple Client Versions: Remote Desktop client (MSI): This is the most common version of the Remote Desktop client for Windows. It can be downloaded as an MSI installer. Azure Virtual Desktop app from the Microsoft Store: This is a preview version of the Remote Desktop client for Windows available in the Microsoft Store. Remote Desktop app from the Microsoft Store: This version is no longer being developed4. Prerequisites: Internet access. A device running one of the following supported versions of Windows: Windows 11, Windows 10, Windows Server 2022, or Windows Server 2019. .NET Framework 4.6.2 or later (may need to be installed on some versions of Windows 10 and Windows Server 2016)4.
