The law of unintended consequences never fails. Happen to have issues with your #Windows machine yesterday? Many did, and it seems most likely tied to a #Cloudstrike update for #Microsoft machines. The lesson here is that when you have your personal and work machines updated, you should always consider delaying updates to proof they don't brick your machine. We have learned the hard way in the past not to update InDesign during a proposal, or Acrobat when trying to finish out a deliverable to a client. Even for us who crutch Apple Macbooks, updating to a new minor #OS release may cause backwards compatibility issues with ALL MS Office apps!!!!! Consider a policy/practice of only updating your apps, OS and firmware after you have either tested the release in a lab or read a few related tech forums to ensure the release/update is stable. You'll thank me later. Note: Potential fix from Cloudstrike (use at your own risk): Brody Nisbet, the director of overwatch at CrowdStrike, also posted on X indicating that the workaround fix the company had issued involves booting up Windows machines into safe mode, finding a file called “C-00000291*.sys,” deleting it, and then rebooting the machine normally. “There is a fix of sorts so some devices in between BSODs should pick up the new channel file and remain stable,” Nisbet posted. https://lnkd.in/g-pdbxTs

Probably the worst Enterprise Administrator's nightmare unfolded yesterday. I was seriously considering changing to AT&T for the bundled savings I get with my fiber internet. My phone service was NOT affected. Maybe I should stay with my current provider. Outages are a thing in the modern age of Information Technology. Is this a false flag for future developments? These issues are something to consider when choosing an Enterprise Administrator. @ CORCORAN INDUSTRIES, INCORPORATED, we strive to educate the customer to allow them to make the best decisions regarding their preferred service providers. Give us a call and let us make sure your well informed to maintain a 99.99% uptime. Microsoft's not the problem, Crowdstrike's not the problem- the problem is much deeper, but also very fixable. A 🧵: 1/6 Operating systems like Windows and MacOS are much too complicated for the needs of most users relative to the threat's facing them and their stakeholders. 2/6 An airline employee checking in passengers, rebooking flights, executing checklists, does not need Windows (or MacOS)- nor does a healthcare employee checking records in an EMR/patient management tool (Epic, etc.). 3/6 A Chromebook, an iPad, an Android device are perfectly adequate. 4/6 Window and MacOS were built for a vastly different environment- one where local applications were much more complicated and fussy, one where there was no Internet (as we know it), one where security was not really a thing. 5/6 The smart move for companies is to simplify their computing while continually making their applications more user-centric. 6/6 Did I mention- please buy my book? https://amzn.to/47NCmfV //https://lnkd.in/getMYw4K

Last Friday's CrowdStrike update inadvertently triggered a widespread outage affecting Windows systems globally. The root cause—a bug within the CrowdStrike kernel driver—highlighted vulnerabilities in the Windows core, leading to system crashes. Today, Microsoft has responded swiftly with the release of a specialised Recovery Tool, designed to assist IT Administrators in restoring affected Windows machines. This tool allows administrators to create a bootable USB drive. It simplifies the recovery process by booting into Windows PE via USB, accessing the impacted system's disk, and automatically removing the problematic CrowdStrike file. Key details for using the Recovery Tool: • Ensure your Windows client is 64-bit with a minimum of 8GB available space. • Admin rights are necessary to create and execute the bootable USB drive. In addition to this tool, Microsoft has published recovery guidelines for Windows Virtual Machines hosted on Azure and procedures for Windows 10 and 11 devices on its Support site. It's crucial to stay vigilant during this recovery phase. The Australian Cyber Security Centre (ACSC) has cautioned about malicious activities exploiting the outage. Threat actors may attempt to exploit vulnerabilities with unauthorised tools and phishing attempts. Always obtain recovery information and updates exclusively from official CrowdStrike and Microsoft sources. Let's prioritise system security and recovery with trusted resources. Stay informed, safeguard your systems, and ensure smooth operations. #CyberSecurity #ITOperations #CrowdStrikeOutage #MicrosoftRecovery
