European and US marketplaces are just fancy department stores 💻 Brands have limited tools. No direct dialogue with customers. No chance to differentiate through shop-in-shop. The customers belong to the marketplace, not the brand. Most other marketplaces have copied this model. And obviously it has significant drawbacks 🤔 No room for brand identity. No customer data. No loyalty-building. You ship your product, and that’s it 🙌🏽 China does it differently, their marketplaces are like real-life malls. Each brand has its own storefront. Custom branding, tools, and direct customer interaction. The marketplace provides the infrastructure for a small fee (2-3%) and they make money on extra services like ads and logistics. Tmall and http://JD.com perfected this. This is why Shopify thrives in the regions mentioned. It’s for brands that want to control the customer relationship. Now we see why China doesn't need Shopify - their marketplaces already function like D2C. I've always wondered why the Chinese experience has not been in demand in Western markets for so many years. Why hasn't anyone built a next-generation marketplace where brands have more opportunities for self-expression, and therefore fewer reasons to think about selling outside the marketplace? Amazon finally got it. They’re now testing storefronts for brands. Own design, custom content, direct communication with customers. A direct challenge to Shopify. Will this push other marketplaces to rethink their strategy? A more in-depth analysis will follow in the upcoming posts 🔥

🌍 𝐄𝐮𝐫𝐨𝐩𝐞'𝐬 𝐂𝐫𝐨𝐬𝐬-𝐁𝐨𝐫𝐝𝐞𝐫 𝐄-𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐞𝐫𝐜𝐞: 𝐀 €𝟑𝟐𝟔 𝐁𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐏𝐨𝐰𝐞𝐫𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐬𝐞! The latest Top 100 Cross-Border Marketplaces Europe report from Cross-Border Commerce Europe is out, and it highlights some game-changing insights into Europe's vibrant e-commerce landscape. Here’s what caught my eye: 📈 𝐌𝐚𝐫𝐤𝐞𝐭 𝐒𝐢𝐳𝐞 & 𝐈𝐦𝐩𝐚𝐜𝐭: In 2023/2024, Europe’s cross-border e-commerce market hit a record €326 billion, with €225 billion (69%) driven by online marketplaces. This underlines how pivotal these platforms are in connecting consumers and businesses across borders. 🏆 𝐓𝐨𝐩 𝐏𝐥𝐚𝐲𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐃𝐨𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐒𝐩𝐚𝐜𝐞: Giants like Amazon and eBay continue to lead, claiming over 50% of marketplace-driven turnover. Yet, the Top 100 cross-border marketplaces collectively reached an impressive €197.01 billion in turnover, reflecting a robust 39.29% growth and showcasing the ecosystem's resilience. 🔮 𝐅𝐮𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞 𝐓𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐝𝐬: 👉 Marketplaces' share of total e-commerce GMV may see a slight dip from 69% to 67.9% by 2025, hinting at a maturing market. 👉 Cross-border traffic continues to expand, with a projected 97.30% of visitors expected to engage in cross-border shopping by 2025. 🚀 𝐌𝐮𝐥𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐧𝐞𝐥 𝐒𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐠𝐢𝐞𝐬 & 𝐍𝐞𝐰 𝐄𝐧𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐭𝐬: The shift towards multichannel selling is reshaping competition. Shein and Temu are notable disruptors, using direct-from-manufacturer models, aggressive pricing, and social media to challenge traditional leaders. Their rapid growth prompts questions about market regulation, labor standards, and consumer safety.

Cross-border eCommerce in Germany: Online stores are stronger in exports, marketplaces dominate imports. It was previously stated that online stores have traditionally been the stronger eCommerce revenue driver in Germany, while marketplaces only became more important in recent years. This is not the case globally: Marketplaces have been outperforming online stores for years. The impact of German online stores therefore extends far beyond domestic borders: Cross-border exports of online stores in Germany are much higher than export GMV of marketplaces. But the latter have seen substantial growth recently.

Research by Boston Consulting Group (BCG) reveals a significant shift in the e-commerce landscape, with marketplaces now driving 67% of global sales, a substantial increase from 40% a decade ago. Specialty marketplaces are emerging as a crucial strategic avenue for retailers. These platforms enable retailers to: • Enhance their product assortment, allowing them to meet the evolving demands of their customers more effectively. • Gather critical insights that help in delivering highly tailored and personalized shopping experiences. • Distinguish themselves from competitors, thereby capturing a larger share of the market. In Europe, the marketplace market is particularly robust, with platforms like Modivo, MediaMarkt, Douglas leading the way. These marketplaces cater to specific niches, such as fashion, consumer electronics, luxury goods, and DIY/home improvement, providing retailers with specialized channels to reach targeted audiences. European consumers are increasingly turning to these marketplaces for their convenience, wide range of products, and competitive pricing. As eCommerce continues to evolve, specialty marketplaces provide retailers with a valuable opportunity to connect with new customers and expand their reach. Marketplaces dominate cross-rorder E-Commerce in Europe! In the fiscal year 2023/2024, online marketplaces generated a remarkable €225 billion, accounting for 69% of the €326 billion total European cross-border e-commerce turnover. According to the latest report, “Top 100 Cross-Border Marketplaces Europe,” by CBCommerce (Cross-Border Commerce Europe), the Top 100 marketplaces achieved a turnover of €197 billion, reflecting a significant growth rate of 39.29%. However, while marketplaces have been crucial drivers in this booming market, forecasts suggest that their share will peak and slightly decline to 67.9% by 2025, signaling a potential maturation of this dynamic sector. As cross-border e-commerce continues to evolve, multichannel strategies and the rise of Chinese players like SHEIN and Temu present both opportunities and challenges to established giants like Amazon and eBay. #CrossBorderEcommerce #Marketplaces #ECommerceGrowth #DigitalEconomy #CBCommerce #Europe #Shein #Temu #Amazon #OnlineShopping #retail #ecommerce #nonfood #nearfood
