Building out the nation's clean tech and battery manufacturing skills base is vital to support our clean energy transition ambitions. That's why Powering Australia's Rod Thiele was pleased to catch up with Battery Research and Innovation Hub Manager Timothy Khoo in Melbourne this week. The Hub, based at Deakin University's Burwood Campus, is a key facility for training Australian company personnel about battery manufacturing processes. Powering Australia and the Hub are developing plans to strengthen the collaboration between the two organisations during 2025, with both organisations looking to ramp up their battery skills and training activities. #poweringaustralia #batteryskills #batterytechnology #energystorage #cleantechmanufacturing

This coming week, I'm in two Australian regions that provide great examples of how universities are helping regions be more than just energy transition project hosts. While the majority of new energy and hydrogen investments will inevitably be destined for regions; an additional focus on research, education, training, manufacturing, innovation and supply chain development, can unlock a greater local dividend, boosting regional social and economic amenity. On Tuesday, I'm attending the official opening of Deakin University's Hycel Technology Hub in Warrnambool, South-West Victoria. Led by the fantastic Hycel Director, Professor Tiffany Walsh, the hub is situated along a key transport corridor that connects industries, communities and resources. As a regional hub for testing hydrogen technologies at scale, it's building momentum for the region to capitalise on the increasing national and global demand for hydrogen, and supporting the local economy to attract further investment. On Wednesday and Thursday, I'm attending the Gladstone Engineering Alliance 2024 Major Projects, Industry and Energy Conference in Gladstone, Central Queensland. Gladstone is often titled the "Hydrogen Capital of Australia" and GEA does a fantastic job of connecting up the region's impressive manufacturers and suppliers with project proponents. On the second day of the GEA conference, I'm presenting on CQUniversity's drive to build our hydrogen and renewable energy capability and capacity in Gladstone, to help realise the ambition of our community, government and industry partners. We are already developing the region's workforce, solving industry challenges, and helping community understanding, but we have much more to do. Regional universities right across the world are a key partner in transitioning regions from boom-bust cycles to sustainable economic development. Project investments are more bankable with a skilled local workforce, local supply chains, and greater community acceptance. Looking forward to the week ahead!
