Harry Friend who leads our Corporate Affairs and Sustainability Practice, has released a key study on ‘The Chief Communications Officer in Focus’. At a time when stakeholder expectations of business have increased significantly, the role of the Chief Communications Officer is more important than ever. However, of all of the functional roles, it remains the least well-defined and, as a consequence, a challenging appointment to get right. In this short paper, we set out the three key factors that elevate the best CCOs today: they must be in the room, they must be commercial in their judgement of opportunities and not just react in a crisis and they must build a trusted relationship with the CEO whilst remaining independent. We also argue that having too many unclear or grey areas around the remit of the role could significantly impact reputation.
