September is World Sinus Health Awareness month! Pondering awareness lead me to thinking about awareness on other levels in our lives. I had the opportunity to share my thoughts regarding education, patients, and politics in this month’s American Academy of Otolaryngology bulletin. An excerpt: “ Of course, a good physician does not blame the patient for thinking the way they do or accuse them of being liars or “sheep” for believing what another physician or health provider may have told them. They simply try and educate the patient as to why their opinion is different. This daily practice of understanding should have created an army of empathetic physicians in our country, ready to consider evidence rationally, and collegially debate our differences, whether in science or politics. Yet, somehow, we cannot even agree on what “good evidence” is, or what “facts” are anymore, outside of our medical practices.” The link to the full piece is here - hope you enjoy! https://lnkd.in/gGEGfgbQ #education #politics #election #democrats #republicans #science #medicineandpolitics #kindness #empathy #understanding #anationdivided #reachingacrosstheaisle Stanford OHNS Stanford University School of Medicine Stanford University

Do you get annual physical exams or get yearly wellness visits? If so, do you find them useful? I enjoyed speaking with Scripps News anchor Chris Stewart about this relevant health topic. As a former primary care doctor who still performs physicals in an opioid treatment program, the topic of annual checkups is important to me! A study published in JAMA by researchers at Northwestern University - The Feinberg School of Medicine found that annual physicals did NOT reduce mortality or cardiovascular events. Wellness visits WERE associated with increased detection of chronic diseases (e.g. hypertension, depression), controlling risk factors (e.g. cholesterol, blood pressure) and preventive services (e.g. colorectal and cervical cancer screening). Moving forward, technology will play a bigger role. For instance, virtual visits are becoming more popular esp'ly among younger, healthier individuals; and among older adults who have mobility or transportation issues. In addition, previsit apps and labwork can help a PCP tailor the visit to the needs of that specific patient. Companies such as OneMedical Group and BellSant are already tailoring visits and using technology to redesign annual visits. Heart disease, stroke, diabetes and cancer remain the leading causes of death in North America and worldwide. But we need to do a better job screening for and treating other epidemics such as loneliness, substance use/addiction and mental illness. Fewer annual visits may also reduce the strain on our overstretched healthcare system as ~48,000 fewer PCPs are expected in the U.S. by 2034 Greenwich House Centers for Disease Control and Prevention American Society of Addiction Medicine - ASAM #physicalexam #annualvisit #wellnessvisit #checkup #DrLipiRoy #healthcare #patientcare #medicaleducation #patienteducation #physician #PCP

Calling all CO Physicians on an issue important to many of us! Speak Out: Contact the State Medical Board Take action to support physicians alongside the Dr. Lorna Breen Heroes' Foundation. Physicians experience a higher rate of suicide than the general population and recent surveys indicate 60% experience burnout due to systemic factors. This is exacerbated by stigma around seeking mental health care. Many state medical boards, including Colorado's, ask invasive mental health questions on licensure applications, which deter physicians from seeking the help they may need. Consider joining this speak out encouraging medical boards to undertake an audit of the licensure applications and change mental health-related questions. https://lnkd.in/gSRphVjH
