"OLTRENERO IN OLTREPÒ: LIVELY DYNAMISM AND AUTHENTIC PINOT NOIR Zenevredo is not only an ideal destination for a day trip, but it is also a must-visit for anyone wanting to discover Oltrepò Pavese; moreover, it offers a unique blend of cultural experiences and stunning landscapes. Complacency: Word of the Decade (or should we say ‘the last generation’?) The current reset in the global wine economy is a painful reminder of what happens when we “get comfortable”. When we live with the adage; “If you want to stop growing, get comfortable.”…. ….then and only then do we see vibrancy in ideas, technology, innovation, excellence, and persistent growth. The wine industry’s worst enemy lies in the term, ”good enough”. Ask Bordeaux producers with their stacking up of what may be unsellable excellence. Ask the Australians whether their industry wide plan was or is ‘good enough’ (although I have been historically impressed by the Australian wine industry’s tenacious planning compared to the lack of such ‘plans’ in other wine producing nations, including the U.S.). One doesn’t have to travel too far down the roads of any California wine region to either see the devastation of “Complacency”. Vineyard land ‘For Sale’ signs dotting the landscape and daily springing up like weeds flourishing in the sun of spring after a wet rainy season. Complacency….now is the mother of opportunity…unless your business is weighted down by the complacency of the last 20 years. Opportunities? Oh yes!! The failures and price reductions and dumping of wine into the markets and a myriad of yet unforeseen event are only beginning to give us indications of the changes coming to wine. But if you’re family or business is generationally minded….. If your business is legacy focused…. If each of us personally are strategically thinking…. THEN this is the most exciting time in modern wine history, possibly since the repeal of prohibition in the US. Here’s a thought for us all to end on a value note: “Land. They don’t make it anymore.” ~ Mark Twain The reset is going to release land into the market that has not been available and is a welcome refreshment to those who have worked hard and now looking for an opportunity to connect to “dirt”. Add to this equation one more thing: Over 25% of all winery and vineyard owners in California do not have a legacy plan and are aging out.
