Why Africa’s Next AU Leaders Must Prioritize Digital Infrastructure
In a recent meeting with some Kenyan officials, private sector representatives, and nonprofit leaders, we discussed priorities for Africa’s future leadership. Many advocated for tangible infrastructure: improved roads, electricity access, a single African currency, and open borders to accelerate trade.
As the discussion went on, I listened carefully. Then, at the end, I shared my perspective. While physical infrastructure is vital, I believe Africa’s future lies in digital connectivity. The next African Union (AU) leader must focus on building and expanding internet infrastructure, making access affordable and available across all regions. Without this, Africa’s Agenda 2063—a united, economically empowered continent—will be hard to realize.
Internet: The Catalyst for Africa’s Development
Internet connectivity is no longer a luxury; it’s essential for education, economic growth, and social progress. Imagine every African child with online education, every entrepreneur reaching new markets, and every citizen engaged in digital democracy. However, many regions lack affordable, high-speed internet. Without bold steps, Africa risks falling behind in the digital age.
Partnering for a Digital Africa
For this vision to succeed, the next AU leader must partner with key internet organizations like the Coalition for Digital Africa, ICANN, and AFRALO. These organizations are already laying the groundwork for Africa’s digital future. The Coalition for Digital Africa is working on digital transformation, ICANN ensures a secure global internet, and AFRALO amplifies African voices in global internet governance.
By collaborating with these groups, the AU can expand high-speed internet to underserved areas, reduce internet costs, and promote local digital content and literacy. This strategy would empower every African, create jobs, and boost regional economies.
A Call for Digital Leadership
The AU’s next leader must see digital infrastructure as a bridge, linking Africa’s cities, rural areas, and communities across borders. Internet access can transform the continent and unlock its vast potential. Now is the time for African leaders to embrace digital connectivity as the foundation for sustainable growth. #Africa2030 #AU #DigitalAfrica #Agenda2063 #CoalitionForDigitalAfrica #ICANN #AFRALO #AfricanUnionCandidates
