It was a packed few days of learning and networking at the Investment Company Institute Leadership Summit, as Mutual Funds turn 100! Engaging with top leaders in asset management provided valuable perspectives on a range of pivotal topics, from market opportunities and regulatory priorities, to the future of distribution. Grateful to have made new connections and eager to apply these insights to drive innovation and growth in our strategies. Ryan Hicke, SEI - "Ego is the enemy of change." Katie Koch President and CEO of The TWC Group - "People aren't afraid of change. People are afraid of losing control." Heidi Ridley, CFA Co-Founder and CEO Radiant Global Investors - "Sustainability is intentional." Jenny Johnson, CEO of Franklin Templeton (also named one of the most powerful women in the world by Forbes) - quoted some lines from poem IF by Rudyard Kipling covering every life lesson... "If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you, but make allowance for their doubting too;" "If you can meet with triumph and disaster, and treat those two impostors just the same;" With panelist Kristy Von Ohlen who presented key considerations for Board Oversight of ETF developments and Todd Johnson. #ICILeadershipSummit #AssetManagement #Innovation

In my experience, the best thing about academic life is getting to work intensively, ideally in small groups, with students eager to learn about the complexities of the world. This week, alongside my wonderful University of Tasmania colleague, Professor Can-Seng Ooi, I ran a strategic deliberation and decision-making scenario for a group of 17 “Future Leaders” from the Westpac Scholars Trust. This group of talented graduate students from The Group of Eight and University of Tasmania brought to the discussion their own disciplinary experiences: from chemistry, marine biology and psychiatry, all the way through to sociology, public health and agriculture. In terms of engagement, creativity and thoughtfulness – you simply couldn’t ask for more. Our hypothetical scenario this week was framed around “foreseeable” developments related to Australia’s diplomatic and strategic links with Asia. The scenario is, by-design, a stretch for everyone – set in a not-too-distant future when artificial intelligence, geopolitical conflict, economic and environmental upheaval, and a fraying social contract raise troubling questions about Australia’s next steps. There are ambiguities, moments of contextual saturation, distractions, inter-locking information asymmetries, disruptions, dead-ends, elevated ambitions, threats, bad-faith actors, auspicious confluences: just like the real world. To the credit of the “Future Leaders”, they engaged deeply with the hard questions and sought to build a collaborative, practical and far-sighted response. Their impressive work in this demanding scenario gives me a lot of hope for our shared futures. Thanks again to Amy Lyden, Alissa Nightingale, Dan Caprar, Sam Wall and Lynne Scanlan-Lamb, and also to "Future Leaders" selection committee members including Jon Nicholson, Jacqueline Lo, David Thodey and Margie Seale, for everything they do to make these opportunities available to the rising generation of Australian leaders. And for those who are interested, the Westpac Scholars Trust will soon open applications for the 2025 “Future Leaders” program. For all the details:

Mentorship is the cornerstone of cultivating the next generation of leaders, both within our communities and across the globe. It’s through mentorship that young minds are nurtured, guided, and empowered to realize their full potential. By sharing our experiences, wisdom, and encouragement, we provide future leaders with the tools they need to navigate challenges, make meaningful decisions, and create lasting change. The ripple effect of mentorship reaches far beyond the individual. It strengthens communities by fostering collaboration, building confidence, and encouraging innovative thinking. A single mentor can inspire countless young leaders, who in turn uplift others, creating a global network of positive impact. At its core, mentorship is about connection, bridging generations and experiences to equip young leaders with the values, insight, and resilience to shape a brighter future. please Invest in these relationships!! It is investing in the future of our world. Together, we can guide the next wave of change makers, ensuring they have the support and wisdom to lead with purpose and vision.
