Integrating light sources in the silicon photonics platform is one of the critical challenges for advanced integrated optics/photonics. Successful integration needs to click many checkboxes, as the crucial requirements are low efficient coupling losses, a small footprint, high assembly yield, the scope of automated processes for scaling up the production, and so on. During the PIC Summit Europe 2024 event, imec re-displayed the activity on multi-wavelength hybrid laser for optical interconnects. imec can flip-chip bonded lasers onto the Si-photonics platform with an alignment accuracy within 500 nm and < 2dB coupling loss coupled to ~ 40mW optical power to SiN waveguides. By adding more advanced functionality to the roadmap for excellence, this development aims for the next generation of telecom, datacom, and sensing applications. 👏 We're proud to share that our project was presented on yet another renowned conference - SPIE Photonics Europe, taking place from 7-11 April Strasbourg, France! 👨🔬 💬 Tumor-LN-oC researchers Christos Katopodis and cooordinator Ioanna Zergioti from National Technical University of Athens were selected to hold an oral #presentation at the event. Their talk, titled “Compact Multichannel Imaging System with Wide FOV and 4x Optical Magnification” presented the results achieved by their work in the project so far in developing a unique #microcoptics module to provide live-imaging for the cell migration the #microfluidic chip. 🔬In cooperation with #TumorLNoC partners, the team has developed a cutting-edge #multichannel imaging system that offers high-resolution imaging across a wide field of view of 7x7 mm2 with a 4x magnification. 🌟 By combining #microlens arrays and micro-aperture arrays, they've successfully overcome the traditional trade-off between resolution and field size! 🚀 Overall, this approach is a very exciting breakthrough in optical imaging and promises significant advancements in applications requiring detailed imaging over large areas while ensuring high-quality imaging! #OpticalImaging #Innovation #TechnologyAdvancements #SPIEPhotonicsEurope

🚀 Exciting Milestone in High-Speed Data Transmission! 🌐 In February, two network engineers at CERN, the heart of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) in Switzerland, achieved a groundbreaking feat by setting up a data link to The Netherlands that reaches speeds of 800 Gbps! That's over 11,000 times the average UK home broadband speed. 🎉 Joachim Opdenakker and Edwin Verheul from SURF, a Dutch IT association, successfully established this link, significantly enhancing scientists' access to LHC experiment results. This remarkable bandwidth allows for real-time data transmission, essential for the staggering volumes of data generated by subatomic particle collisions at the LHC. In March, tests using Nokia's advanced equipment confirmed these speeds, demonstrating the potential for even faster data transfer in the future. With the LHC's upcoming upgrade in 2029, producing five times more data, this high-speed link is a crucial step forward. As we push the boundaries of what's possible with fibre optics, the future of data transmission looks incredibly promising.
