What does it take to bring a visionary technology from a physics lab to the brink of a commercial revolution? In the case of hollow core optical fibres for optical communications, certainly a lot of resilience and commitment, an outstanding team of researchers, and great collaborators along the way. Over the last 12 years, our progress has been marked by 17 postdeadline papers at OFC and ECOC. These have been co-authored by nearly 100 researchers from the ORC in Southampton, as well as from TuE, the Tyndall National Institute, Coriant, Eblana Photonics, OFC, Phoenix Photonics, UCL, Politecnico di Torino, Links Foundation, Cisco Photonics, Lumenisity and Microsoft Azure Fiber. MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 23 11AM to 12PM 📍 CSU Lory Student Center 376-78 Title: Photonic Architectures for In-Memory Computing Using Nonvolatile Optical Materials. Abstract: Photonics information processing strategies offer the unique ability to perform analog computation with ultra-low latency and high efficiency. However, designing compact and reconfigurable photonic architectures which scale well is a challenge. The combination of bistable optical materials (such as phase-change materials like Ge2Sb2Te5) and integrated photonics is a promising approach which enables nonvolatile optical memory on-chip with low drift, compact footprint, and high-speed readout. This talk will focus on developing robust and scalable photonic memories—together with wavelength division multiplexing and “in-memory” computing techniques—to enable high-speed matrix-vector operations for machine learning applications. #seminars #photonics #computing #opticalmaterials

Their dedication and passion for pushing the boundaries of knowledge are truly inspiring, and we are honored to be a part of their journey. --- “Many quantum computing and networking architectures employ photonic qubits with information encoded in polarization. Quantum Frequency Conversion (QFC) is essential in such systems as a means of achieving spectral homogeneity among different artificial atoms and/or enabling transmission of spin entangled single photons (SESP) across long distances in optical fiber. Periodically-poled lithium niobate (PPLN) provides a platform for the QFC due to its relatively strong d3 nonlinear coefficient, but state of the art waveguides in PPLN still have considerably large mode volumes compared to SOI or thin-film devices. As a result, they require high pump powers to work in the non-depletive pump regime, and strong amplification of the pump is essential. In our recent work, we generate and collect SESP at 493nm (~607THz) from Ba-138 trapped ions and use two QFC stages to modulate the signal to ~1300nm, allowing for ultra-low loss transmission in fiber between different nodes of our quantum network. In each stage, we employ a Sagnac architecture with polarization rotation in the loop to achieve phase stable, polarization diverse QFC. The first of these brings the SESP to an intermediate wavelength 780nm -- chosen for its ability to drive Rb cold atoms -- with a 1343nm pump, amplified by an MPB-RFA to ~1W output power capable of pumping both arms of the Sagnac loop (https://lnkd.in/eXHtnpST). These defects can generate streams of completely random photons, making them ideal for quantum applications. Researchers at Purdue University and the University of Illinois are using PI’s P-561 Nanopositioning stages and E-712 controllers to localize and characterize single-photon emission from NV centers. This workstation, integrated with PI's advanced control algorithms, allows precise scanning, localization, and analysis of emitters at the atomic scale. On October 8th we had the pleasure to welcome high-level guests from the U.S.A. Dr. Patricia Gruber, the Science and Technology Adviser to the Secretary of U.S. Department of State 🌎, together with Linda Johnson and Kristina Mader from the U.S. embassy in Germany, visited #FraunhoferEMFT in order to learn more about our top-notch application-oriented research activities. During the intensive two-hour visit, our colleagues Alexandra Schewski and Ursula Gossner gave an expert overview on how the microelectronics processes in the Fraunhofer EMFT cleanroom make 𝘀𝗰𝗮𝗹𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗿𝗲𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗱𝘂𝗰𝗶𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗱𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗼𝗻𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗾𝘂𝗮𝗻𝘁𝘂𝗺 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝘂𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘀 happen. 🔬Johannes Weber presented test results of qubit measurements obtained in the 𝗰𝗼𝗼𝗹𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗹𝗮𝗯 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗵𝗼𝘂𝘀𝗲 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗰𝗿𝘆𝗼𝘀𝘁𝗮𝘁 below 10 mK. ❄️ Horst Gieser gave an insight into the topics and high-lights of Fraunhofer EMFT and the dedicated mindset of our researchers. 💡Integrated light as a key to future computers In the #OptoGaN project, researchers from #TUBraunschweig and Friedrich-Schiller-Universität Jena are jointly tackling one of the major challenges of chip technology: Combining electronics and photonics on one chip. 🔬🌟 Using a novel method, the project aims to contribute for example to the development of the Lower Saxony quantum computer in QVLS | Quantum Valley Lower Saxony with compact, customised light sources and conductors. "SUMMER SCHOOL IN OPTICS AND PHOTONICS'24" Applied Photonics Initiative team is honoured to welcome the decorated and highly renowned researchers, scientists and professors as the guest speakers.
