Strengthen food safety in Nigeria ✔🚫 Marché International de Rungis SEMMARIS, French leader of wholesale market is performing a study Funded by AFD - Agence Française de Développement (French Development Agency) to define a strategy to develop and strengthen city markets in Nigeria. SEMMARIS has mandated Phylum, with Francois Gary and Dooshima Kwange, Nigerian expert, to define a strategy and an action plan strengthen food safety on raw products (meat, fish, vegetables, fruits, subsistence crops) in wholesale markets.👏 📣Food safety is one of the most important One Health issue in Nigeria. Around 200,000 people including under-five children reportedly die annually from the consumption of contaminated foods in Nigeria (National Policy on Food Safety and Quality and Its Implementation Plan 2023). Engaging a food safety strategy focused on market is perfectly relevant as it is more than 50% of the food sourcing of Nigerian population, as it is a key hub to involve farmers as suppliers, vendors on the market and consumers. Unfortunately, the food safety in these supply chains is not sufficiently considered by Nigerian competent authorities. A challenge to propose a more pragmatic and efficient approach. #Foodsafety #Nigeria #Streetvendor #SEMMARIS #Phylum

Ensuring Food Safety in South Africa: Registration of Spaza Shops In an important move towards improving food safety and protecting consumers, the South African government has mandated the registration of spaza shops. These informal retail outlets, commonly found in townships and rural areas, play a vital role in food distribution, but many have operated without proper oversight. By officially registering these businesses, authorities aim to: ✅ Ensure compliance with health and safety standards ✅ Reduce the risks of foodborne illnesses ✅ Promote quality assurance in the food supply chain ✅ Enhance consumer confidence in local food products The registration process will also provide spaza shop owners with opportunities for training, better supply chain management, and access to resources that help improve their businesses while safeguarding public health. This step not only supports the formalization of the informal sector but aligns with broader efforts to enhance food safety across all food outlets, large or small. Let’s continue working together to build a safer, healthier food environment for all South Africans. #FoodSafety #SpazaShops #SouthAfrica #HealthAndSafety #ConsumerProtection .

Exposing the Hidden Dangers in Nigeria's Informal Food Markets My team and I have been investigating food safety in Nigeria's informal markets, and what we've uncovered is alarming. Access to clean water, a basic necessity for food safety and hygiene, is severely lacking. This puts food vendors and consumers at risk of waterborne illnesses and other health hazards. But that's not all - our research has revealed even more shocking truths about the state of food safety in these markets. Stay tuned for our full documentary video, where we'll reveal the full extent of our findings and the impact it has on public health. In the meantime, we're taking action. Food Doctors Nigeria Limited is launching a project to install mobile water treatment kiosks in informal markets across Nigeria, starting with one market at a time. This game-changing initiative will provide food vendors with access to clean water, promoting a culture of food safety and protecting public health. Watch out for our full documentary video, coming soon! In it, we'll take you deep into the heart of Nigeria's informal markets and expose the hidden dangers that threaten our health. You won't want to miss it! #FoodSafety #InformalMarkets #Nigeria #WaterAccess #MobileWaterTreatment #FoodDoctorsNg #Documentary #ComingSoon #WatchOut #FoodSafetyMatters #PublicHealth" #fooddoctorsng WaterAid FoodSafety4Africa

Yayyyy, it's International World Food Day🌎🥳 . . . . Today, October 16th, marks the International World Food Day, a global celebration aimed at promoting worldwide awareness and action against hunger, malnutrition, and poverty. As a Food Science and Technology student, I join the global community in commemorating this significant day, with a special focus on my dear country, Nigeria. As I reflect on the state of food security in Nigeria, I am reminded of the pressing need for improved food safety. Ensuring that our food systems provide safe, nutritious, and healthy food for all Nigerians is a collective responsibility. Unfortunately, foodborne illnesses remain a significant public health concern in our country, with far-reaching consequences for human health, economic productivity, and national development. Nigeria's food safety state can be characterized by: 1. Inadequate food handling and storage practices. 2. Limited access to safe water and sanitation. 3. Insufficient food regulation and enforcement. 4. Low awareness among consumers and food handlers. These challenges has resulted in: 1. High incidence of foodborne illnesses. 2. Economic losses due to food spoilage and contamination. 3. Negative impacts on tourism, trade, and investment. As we celebrate World Food Day, I envision a Nigeria where: 1. Food safety is prioritized as a national agenda. 2. Regulations and enforcement mechanisms are in place. 3. Food handlers and consumers are educated on safe practices. 4. Access to safe, nutritious food is ensured for all. To be able to achieve this, we must: 1. Strengthen institutional frameworks and policies. 2. Invest in food safety research and development. 3. Enhance capacity building for food handlers and regulators. 4. Promote public awareness and education. World Food Day serves as a reminder of our collective responsibility to ensure safe, nutritious, and healthy food for all. Together, we can create a brighter future for our nation, where food safety is a fundamental right, not a privilege. Let's make food safety a priority for Nigeria. #WorldFoodDay #FoodSafety #Nigeria #MicrobiologyAndFoodScience #FoodSecurity

Check out this new blog, "Enhancing Food Safety Practices in the Upper West Region of Ghana: Healthier Markets Lead to Healthier Lives." This blog post explores the most effective methods of communication to increase food safety in #Ghana. Food safety is crucial for public health. Recognizing that healthier markets lead to healthier lives, USAID - Bureau for Humanitarian Assistance’s Feed the Future Ghana Market Systems and Resilience (MSR) Activity, in collaboration with the Ghanaian Food and Drugs Authority (FDA), launched a comprehensive food safety awareness campaign in the Upper West Region. The campaign, conducted in Sissala East and Nawdoli-Kaleo districts, focused on educating market women, consumers, and buyers about the dangers of aflatoxins, misuse of agrochemicals, and residue contamination in grains and legumes. This initiative is a significant step toward safer food handling practices and protecting community health. #FoodSafety #FoodSafetyEducation Read more here ⬇️ https://lnkd.in/gnuSZHdg
