I’ve been a full-time physician entrepreneur for nearly two decades. My journey began with operating my first start-up for almost a decade before pursuing my MBA. From there, I co-founded a revenue cycle AI company that was acquired, and later joined an early-stage digital health company, helping guide it from Series A through its IPO on the London exchange. Along the way, I’ve experienced both success and failure, and through grit, determination, and a growth mindset, I’ve learned invaluable lessons about being a physician entrepreneur. The entrepreneurial path for a physician is unique—different from someone in their 20s building a startup in their garage or even a non-clinical healthcare professional. Get to know the American Heart Association's work rooted in local communities and cities, alike. The AHA is issuing its latest call for formal submissions to its EmPOWERED to Serve Business Accelerator™. The program invites innovative #startups -- local #healthequity and #socialimpact #entrepreneurs -- struggling to find #investors to apply for this year's cohort. The Accelerator is searching for a diverse pool of social and #digitalhealthtech founders of #nonprofits and start-up #forprofit entities that are making material health impact and addressing one or more of the social drivers of health – the social and economic conditions into which people are born, live, learn, work and play. “For eight years, the American Heart Association Business Accelerator has been an incredible resource for local entrepreneurs and organizations addressing the social drivers of health in some of the most under-resourced areas of the country,” said Marsha Jones, chairperson and chief volunteer officer of the American Heart Association. “Through the valuable mentorship, support, and for many, funding, that we provide, these local founders and changemakers can take the next steps to improve the health and wellness of their communities in new and innovative ways.” Applications will be accepted May 1 through June 28, 2024. At Elzeever&Company, we are passionate about driving #positive change and empowering organizations that are dedicated to creating a lasting #impact. This week, our team had the honor of attending the Asseck Round Table, where thought #leaders convened to discuss strategies for crafting policies and regulations that foster an environment conducive to entrepreneurial #growth. While the discourse spanned various sectors, we were particularly inspired by the potential implications for the #nonprofit industry. As advisors to numerous mission-driven organizations, we recognize the immense value of cultivating an entrepreneurial mindset within this domain. Throughout the insightful conversations, we explored the unique challenges faced by non-profit #entrepreneurs, such as limited access to #funding, navigating complex regulatory frameworks, and scaling #sustainable solutions. By engaging with stakeholders from diverse sectors, we gained invaluable perspectives on how to create an ecosystem that nurtures and supports impact-driven #entrepreneurship. One of the key takeaways was the importance of simplifying regulatory processes and advocating for policies that remove unnecessary barriers. By streamlining bureaucratic hurdles, we can ensure that resources are effectively channeled towards driving meaningful change, rather than being consumed by administrative complexities. Furthermore, we recognized the need for increased #collaboration and cross-sector #partnerships. By fostering an environment that encourages knowledge-sharing, skill-building, and access to mentorship, we can empower non-profit entrepreneurs to develop #innovative #solutions and scale their impact effectively. At Elzeever&Company, we firmly believe that entrepreneurship is a powerful catalyst for positive transformation within the non-profit sector. By embracing an entrepreneurial mindset, organizations can think strategically, leverage resources efficiently, and adapt to the ever-changing landscape of societal needs. As a person who teaches entrepreneurship, has been an entrepreneur, and served on many boards and advisory boards to both new ventures and established organizations, I have not been an admirer of most private equity takeovers of existing organizations. I am particularly critical of takeovers of hospitals and other healthcare organizations. They often justify the takeover to the public as "hey, we will bring a lot of private capital to the table to invest in and improve these organizations!" However, it seems to me that they more often strip these firms of their assets for their own enrichment and then leave them near extinction. This article covers research that claims to show that this is what most often happens in takeovers of hospitals. Sadly, when private equity took over the non-profit Catholic hospitals and created Steward, this seems to be exactly what happened.
