Wow! Finally! It's been nearly 5 years in the making, but they've only gone and done it! The UK Government has FINALLY published illustrative base fees for packaging EPR. In the second year of EPR, fees will be modulated to ensure that packaging materials with a lower environmental impact will be the least expensive for producers to use. The specific packaging types subject to higher or lower (“modulated”) fees will be announced in Autumn 2024 (so pretty soon, hopefully). For a long time, it was starting to feel a little like 'crying wolf,' especially in the brands I worked for. More than a few folks doubted EPR would happen or, if it did, would be much watered down. And I don't blame them—it's been almost 5 years of false dawns. Now that the illustrative fees are out, let's hope any businesses yet to plan for this feel better equipped to do so! With New Zealand currently consulting on proposals for an EPR 'lite' scheme focused on single-use plastic packaging, let's hope this level of indecision and uncertainty isn't experienced here… https://lnkd.in/g-6_3fH7

📜 Significant regulatory advancements over recent years in Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) across the European Union (EU) and the UK have led to revisions in current schemes for packaging, batteries, and WEEE. 🇪🇺 The EU, along with the UK, are dedicated to tackling environmental challenges and promoting sustainability particularly in packaging waste management, with a mandate from the Packaging and Packaging Waste Directive that all member states will need to have established EPR schemes for packaging by the year 2024. 🌍 At Clarity, we understand that business operations and logistics can be complex, often extending beyond the UK and involving multiple markets. This reality makes businesses subject to various EPR systems across different countries. To assist in navigating these requirements, we've compiled a comprehensive guide to the rollout of EPR across EU member countries. ➡️ Read our article on a state-by-state guide to the rollout of EPR across EU member countries: https://bit.ly/47u0HI0 #EPR #EuropeanUnion #EU #Sustainability #PackagingWaste

The passage of Minnesota's Packaging Waste and Cost Reduction Act marks a significant milestone in EPR legislation. However, states like New York, Illinois, and Maryland are still exploring their options with varying degrees of progress. The law’s success is attributed to its focus on recycling needs, collaborative approach, and data-driven goals in EPR policies as noted by John J. Richard at the Flexible Packaging Association. Learn more about the status of EPR bills across the U.S. and the potential for future developments. #FlexiblePackaging #Sustainability

🌍 Preparing for EPR: Lessons from Canada’s Success 🇨🇦 As Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) legislation continues to expand across the U.S., with packaging laws now in place in California, Colorado, Maine, Oregon, Minnesota, and Vermont, there’s a lot we can learn from Canada’s well-established EPR systems. At the NLCRC’s fall meeting in Montreal, hosted by RPM eco, Integrated management system for recyclables, members experienced Canada’s EPR program in action through a unique field tour. From commercial oil change centers to municipal drop-off sites and recycling facilities, members witnessed the entire lifecycle of post-consumer material collection, processing, and recycling. Here are three key takeaways U.S. companies can apply as they prepare for EPR reporting deadlines in 2025: - Knowledge is Power - Accessibility Drives Participation - The Power of Collective Action As EPR laws shape the future of packaging in the U.S., the NLCRC is committed to supporting members and the value chain in navigating this regulatory shift. It's a start.
For too long, council tax payers have picked up the bill to dispose of unnecessary and unrecyclable packaging. We're glad the government has now told councils and waste disposal authorities how much money to expect from the new extended producer responsibility scheme and hope this is just the start. We need EPR for other materials, to fully incentivise producers to help decarbonise the waste stream. Clyde Loakes MBE sets out our position: https://lnkd.in/e4RyjGKd

I had an great discussion this morning at breakfast on extended producer responsibility (EPR) and how the topic will be gaining prominence in numerous sectors. There are logistical constraints to meeting recycling goals, and EPR is a way of addressing them. My colleagues with the Construction & Demolition Recycling Association (CDRA) know this topic all too well. Good read linked below for anyone interested in learning more about the issue. https://lnkd.in/ekp373yQ.

📦 Navigating the Complex Landscape of Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) in the U.S. Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) laws are reshaping the packaging industry by holding producers accountable for the lifecycle of their products. Starting with Maine and Oregon in 2021, and now expanding to states like California, Colorado, and Minnesota, EPR is driving significant changes in how packaging waste is managed. Under EPR, producers are required to pay fees based on the packaging they distribute, with state-approved Producer Responsibility Organizations (PROs) managing these fees to enhance recycling infrastructure. The governance of EPR programs varies, from Maine’s DEP having extensive control to California’s shared oversight between producers and CalRecycle. As the legislative landscape rapidly evolves, it’s essential for industry stakeholders to stay informed and compliant. The National Lubricant Container Recycling Coalition (NLCRC) is here to support you through this transition. Follow our blog series for updates on EPR legislation and what it means for our industry. https://bit.ly/3MmlIvO #PetroleumPackaging #CircularEconomy #Recycling #EPR #Packaging #Sustainability

⏳ Delays in the implementation of #EPR Schemes including Packaging Extended Producer Responsibility (pEPR); Simpler Recycling in England; and Deposit Return Schemes (DRS) across the #UK have left local authorities unable to address suitable planning and budgeting required by the reforms as declared by the Local Authority Recycling Advisory Committee (LARAC). ⚠ Meanwhile, companies that missed the EPR reporting deadline of 31st of May to submit their #packaging data might face legal actions. 📜 The list of organisations (‘producers’) who have already reported their data is available on the UK Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs website. ♻ The reporting is crucial as it will be used to calculate fees paid by producers to cover waste management costs and therefore payments to local authorities and service providers involved in post-consumer stages of supply chains such as waste collection and #recycling. #wastemanagement #DRS #productstewardship #circulareconomy #EPR #sustainability https://lnkd.in/eujF7WC2
