It is always stimulating to catch up with the indefatigable Vicki Thomson from Australia's The Group of Eight - who visited Times Higher Education towers with Dr Sally Nimon today. It is quite extraordinary how much the UK and Australian systems have in common - not least that both are facing-up to the awful consequences of ugly, rising anti-immigrant sentiment, with international students treated as pawns in a wider political game. International education is an exceptional success story for both nations - a truly great export to be proud of - and yet both university systems are dealing with a short-sighted clampdown on international students, with dire financial consequences. Another shared challenge is declining public trust in universities - or the "social license to operate" as Vicki put it. Both sectors need to double down on public engagement to promote their extraordinary value to society. I'm pleased to say that both nations excel in THE's Impact Rankings, which provide an evidence base to demonstrate powerful social and economic impact. There is lots to explore at the forthcoming THE World Academic Summit at the The University of Manchester - under the leadership of Duncan Ivison who joins the UK sector directly from Sydney. Phil Baty perhaps ask Vickie if she has any thoughts as to why the HE sector in Australia, as in the UK, has very little support from the public. Last week Public First released survey data that showed only 10% of respondents in the UK listed more funding for universities as a priority - on the bottom of a list of priorities. It surprises and saddens me that with all the marketing smarts Australian and UK universities the sector still cannot steffectively communicate their own value proposition. It is a vital sector to both economies but it does need to do much better in how to market itself.

Mr. Phil Beatty, a Global Sustainable Conference should be held in Pakistan, the universities of Pakistan are ready to host it
Nice 👍
Congratulations my friend!!
I am greatly looking forward to the summit at Manchester. Given the similarities between Australia and the UK, Duncan will be able to share so much experience when he joins us very soon.
Great opportunity! Legends indeed
