Bayer going flat. Is this part of a change of paradigm in business leadership? Will Bayer prove that flat organizations are effective even in big and complex production organizations? Can well trained people self-organize and still be aligned around a common strategy? Or is this just a fancy way to announce a wave of layoffs looking for urgent savings? Will the natural leaders emerging in these project teams do the job of professional middle managers, just for lower salaries? I have no answers, but many questions and a big curiosity to see the next steps.

Paul Testa, the company's executive vice president for supply chain and manufacturing in North America, and I chatted about how the Triangle-area's higher education institutions (he shouted out University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Duke University, North Carolina State University, and Central Carolina Community College) helped attract the company, what the jobs at the Sanford plant will look like, curriculum and trainings for the jobs, and potential expansion in the future. ❌ 'Just Do It' does not work in this industry ❌ A common issue I come across when leading projects delivering acquisition and divestment deals in the pharmaceutical industry, is a team's over eagerness to proceed without an understanding of the impact a change can have. Pursuing activities in the wrong order leads to serious problems and wasted time and effort further down stream. These types of projects, specifically ones in the pharma industry come with their own unique set of complexities. If you tackle them in the wrong order it’s often akin to a cartoon character sawing off the branch he's sitting on.😲 My broad and extensive experience in the industry has allowed to hone my skills enabling me to navigate these complexities and empower inexperienced teams, to ensure we succeed and gain the right outcome for the project. 💻 Head to my website to find out more about how I can add value to your organisation. Do you think middle-managers add value to a company? I'm very hard against middle-managers for a long long time, years before all the tech giants started to get rid of them. I have always taken inspiration from a business man in Japan that made his fortune buying struggling tech companies, firing all the middle-managers, and giving the engineers a pay raise. Working with middle-managers (important: that ONLY middle-manage) has given me the impression most teams would be more efficient without them. It's also a brain-drain, because they often get paid more for doing basically nothing all day. So most of the best engineers and sales people try to become middle-managers. The Bayer CEO seems to agree with my take on middle-managers, taking a very extreme stance:
