Join me for an exclusive webinar October 24th at 1:00 PM ET unveiling the groundbreaking Business Book ROI Study, the largest-ever survey of published business authors. Between April and August 2024, four author service organizations—Amplify Publishing Group, Gotham Ghostwriters, Smith Publicity, and Thought Leadership Leverage—teamed up with bestselling author and former Forrester SVP Josh Bernoff to conduct a survey of over 300 non-fiction authors. Our goal was simple: to uncover the factors that most likely generate a positive return on investment (ROI) for authors pursuing book projects. Discover the true value of publishing a business book beyond just book sales. We’ll break down the hard numbers—royalties earned, sales of consulting and speaking services—as well as the invaluable, non-material returns such as increased visibility, media inquiries, and personal brand growth. In this live discussion, we’ll dive into: • The ROI of business book publishing: What’s the real payoff? • How to weigh the costs—financial, time, and emotional—of bringing a book to life. • Key takeaways and lessons for every aspiring or current author, whether self-publishing, working with a hybrid publisher, or landing a deal with a traditional publisher. 𝐌𝐞𝐞𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐏𝐚𝐧𝐞𝐥: • Josh Bernoff - Bestselling author, editor, and former SVP at Forrester. • Peter Winick - CEO of Thought Leadership Leverage. • Dan Gerstein - CEO of Gotham Ghostwriters. • Naren Aryal - CEO of Amplify Publishing Group. • Marissa Eigenbrood - President of Smith Publicity, Inc.. 𝗪𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮 𝗯𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗯𝗼𝗼𝗸 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗽𝗮𝘆 𝗼𝗳𝗳—𝗶𝗳 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗱𝗼 𝗶𝘁 𝗿𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁. That’s the conclusion from a publishing industry survey of more than 300 business book authors. “Doing it right” means spending some money. 𝗔𝘂𝘁𝗵𝗼𝗿𝘀 𝘄𝗵𝗼 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸𝗲𝗱 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗴𝗵𝗼𝘀𝘁𝘄𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗱𝘂𝗰𝗲𝗱 𝗯𝗼𝗼𝗸𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘄𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝘀 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗳𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗮𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗼𝘀𝗲 𝘄𝗵𝗼 𝗱𝗶𝗱 𝗻𝗼𝘁. (That was the median return.) Only about eight percent of authors surveyed worked with ghostwriters, but those who did had a median revenue of $92,500, compared to $18,200 in median revenue for all authors in the survey. Success comes in other forms than sales: 90% of authors reported receiving “nonmonetary value” (think invitations, leads, offers, etc.), and 89 percent said writing a book was a good idea. That’s good, because book sales rarely met expectations: median sales were 4,600 units for traditionally published books, 1,600 units for hybrid published books and 700 units for self published books. If sales is your major metric of success, this can be worrying. Traditionally published books had a major edge in profitability, in part because some authors received book advances. For many people, especially busy professionals, the process of securing an agent and getting a publishing deal is difficult or impossible because their book, while good and useful, doesn’t meet publishers’ needs. That’s where self-publishing can really deliver. A notable 68% of business book authors said they were now more credible to prospects and clients; 61% said their personal brand was worth more. Most authors completed their goals, such as elevating important topics and boosting their reputations. More highlights next week. To read the survey, go to:

I index a lot of business books by traditional and hybrid publishers. So I was interested to read the results of a return of investment (ROI) survey of business book authors conducted by Josh Bernoff, Bill Sherman, and AJ Marsden (sponsored by AMG, Gotham Ghostwriters, Thought Leadership Leverage, and Smith Publicity). The survey participants were divided almost evenly among hybrid-published authors, self-published authors, and authors with traditional publishers. The most popular services used by surveyed authors included copy editors, graphic designers, PR agencies/launch specialists, developmental editors, book or writing coaches, and social media specialists. There were no mentions of the ROI for the cost of indexing. But that doesn't mean that business books don't include indexes. They do! Business books are meant to be read cover to cover AND dipped into. Sometimes the index user is searching for a passage they read and maybe they want to add a quote to an article or post they're writing. Other times they want to find out if a particular person's point of view was included in the book. Regardless of the reason, the index helps the person find what they're looking for. Interesting new first-of-its-kind study validating the business impact that books can have for thought leaders. Kudos to Dan Gerstein and Gotham Ghostwriters for developing this needed piece of research!
If you or your clients/contacts are thinking of writing a business or thought leadership book, here is some news you might be able to use: My agency Gotham Ghostwriters and three partner firms just released the results of the first ever large-scale study of the return on investment for business book authors. The key takeaways from the in-depth survey we conducted with 300+ authors: — 64 percent of the authors with books out for 6 months or more reported making a profit outside of book sales, with a median gross profit of $11,000 — Almost 20 percent of authors with books out for 6 months or more generated a profit of $250,000 or more — 9 out of 10 authors were happy with the results and said they would do it again -- Books that used a ghostwriter were FOUR TIMES as profitable as others You can learn more about the study and download the full report here: https://authorroi.com/ Thanks to our terrific research leader Josh Bernoff and our partners: Thought Leadership Leverage, Amplify Publishing Group, and Smith Publicity, Inc.

Hybrid publishing is different from traditional publishing for a few fantastic reasons. 1) The author doesn’t have to pitch agents for months or years who then have to pitch publishing houses for months or years before the author can get a contract. You get to say, “I want to publish my book in the next few months,” and BOOM! the publishing genie (me) grants your wish! 2) You, the author, have the ability to purchase books at the author cost (for us, just the cost of printing and shipping them to you), so when you need books for a talk or workshop, again, wish granted! 3) Because you have purchased a package, you are also purchasing reassurance that your book won’t go out of print. THIS is a huge deal to leaders because you know that you can use your book as an evergreen marketing piece one year, five years, even ten years down the road. Want to direct people to your book a few years from now? Wish granted! And here’s a little bonus wish that most genies aren’t going to add on: 4) Because your book is print-on-demand, when someone orders a book, it is printed and shipped to them. So YOU, the author, don’t have to stock copies in your basement or a warehouse (unless that’s your jam!). I, personally, like to keep between 10-20 copies of each of my books available for when I go to events. Don’t want to rent a space to store your books? Wish granted! So if you’re wondering why I charge for hybrid publishing when traditional publishers don’t charge, it’s because you’re getting a whole lot more (plus faster results) in the process! Doesn’t that sound so much better than gambling on a book deal or getting pissed when your traditional publisher decides to stop printing your book? Raise your hand if you’d rather have a publishing genie in your corner than stand in line, just hoping to make your wish come true! #leadership #coriwamsley #auroracorialis #businessbooks #editor #author #authority #authorscommunity #speaker #speakerlife #speakercoach #coachlife #bookcoach #writingcoach #storytelling #getonstage #getyourgoals #successstory #successmindset
