Global Economic Correspondent, The New York Times

From a casual look at the implications of Houthi rebels firing on vessels headed toward the Suez Canal, you could come away with the impression that this is a calamity for the shipping industry. Cargo headed from Asia to Europe and the US must now go the long way around the African continent, adding costs and delays. That is true, but — yet again — higher costs spells fatter profits for the shipping industry, which basically functions like a cartel and is in no way transparent to those who depend on it. Which would be all of us. #supplychain #shipping #trade #globalization
