2 startup things I’ve read lately that our data disagrees with. 1) Dilution in seed and Series A rounds is rising. Untrue. Dilution median for primary seed continues to be right around 20% and the 75th percentile hasn’t budged much either. Bridge round dilution has ticked up however. 2) Only AI companies are raising. About 30-35% of capital invested this year into early-stage startups on Carta has gone to AI…which means quite a lot has gone elsewhere! Now I will say that percentage is much higher than 2023 - and founders would do well to have a good story around why they aren’t using AI (if you choose that path). But AI ≠ all VC 🙏 Going to do a multi-hundred slide recap of 2024 in VC soon - if you’ve got questions I should answer, drop them in the comments! #startups #founders #venturecapital #seed #SeriesA

I’ve met some healthcare founders—particularly those working on long-term trials—feel pressured to shoehorn AI into their narrative to attract VC attention. It’s reassuring to see data like this that shows not all funding is AI-focused.

Great pulse on the market Peter Walker. Founders need to be reassured.

well i mean you're biased. if you use AI to double-check those figures, you'll learn that, in fact, 123% of VC funding has gone to AI.

Look forward to the recap. If there is away to cover some sectors in depth (hint: fintech). A horizontal slice and dice of the market as opposed to a vertical one, that will be great, hopefully that still keeps it within 100 slides and is not too much extra work. Thank you in advance.

Peter Walker would love to understand how VC that are investing in deep tech are changing their fund structures to account for longer time to IPO. Are there are more 15 year funds, more evergreens, different management fees, etc?
