My 6-year-old is learning how to do 15 x 6 after 2 days. I’m impressed. Screen time isn't bad for your kids (with moderation). What's bad is that 99% of the kid content on screens is trash (e.g., YouTube). I'm fine with my kids using their iPad everyday to learn from the right apps. I highly recommend Synthesis for learning K-5 math. Also check out my interview about how parents can support their high-achieving children: https://lnkd.in/gYd-u3r2
My daughter is 6 years old too, and she loves to play Roblox on her iPad. It would be awesome if Roblox had types of games where children could learn things like math, logic, and more.
Thanks for sharing this Peter. I hadn't heard about Synthesis - gonna try it. We use Khan Academy extensively and the kids would welcome a change...let me know if you have other suggestions.
Thanks for sharing! I completely agree—quality of content makes all the difference in screen time. My whole job is based on this and BOTH my daughters are enrolled in Synthesis. At Carrots&Cake, we’ve curated a list of high-quality educational apps to help parents make smarter choices! It’s too overwhelming when you’re on your own.
Super useful posts - struggling to get our neurodivergent son to engage with Maths at the moment, and this app looks great 🙌
It is not cheap but I put all my 3 kids in Kumon. My 6-year old is in Kumon learning 2 years above his 1st school grade. The teaching at school is so slow and in my opinion that Eureka math that CA schools follow, wth is that :) +1 for more teaching apps and even more for schools to adopt new methods.
Whether we like it or not, our world is built around being connected to phones, tablets, screens. There just aren't opportunities for kids today the way I remember it when I was running around in the woods all the time getting my hands dirty. I do hope we find a way to shift back toward a more balanced experience for our children but in the meantime this is their reality.
What other math apps have you tried before this?
Ugh. Makes me so sad that high-achieving classes are being cut! I have such fond memories of all the extra stuff I experienced in those classes when I was in elementary school. They don't separate high performers in separate classes in Belgium either, where I currently live, but the teachers do take the time to provide more advanced work (on the side) when they see a need. And, I fully agree that there is such a thing as good screen time and bad screen time (which my 12yo calls "brain rot") 😂
We're using the reading.com app to teach my three-year-old to read, and it's awesome so far. It's super engaging and well-paced.
